When a student wakes up in the wee hours of the mourning they feel tired and sleepy. They are trying to resist the temptation of pressing the snooze button. But if they do press it they will be late for school. School should start later because students will get more sleep. Be healthy/safe, and it will be beneficial to many people. Students should get about 8-9 hours of sleep but most students get less than 7 hours of sleep. Research shows students who have 8-9 hours of sleep do better in school academically than if they had less than 7 hours of sleep. Most students above elementary level sleep later because changes in their body shifts their body clock to sleep later due to them getting tired more slowly. A later start to school will allow these students to get the recommended 8-9 hours of sleep. Not getting enough sleep can lead to health/mental problems such as obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, behavior problems, and many more health or mental complications. Students might also be in danger to do drugs and other harmful substances due to depression and mental problems according to WebMed. But having a later or delayed start to school will give students enough sleep to be healthy and safe. There are many benefits to having a delayed school time. Teachers may have time to go to class early and prepare. People who drive students to school can have a good night’s sleep before they hit the road so they can avoid having an accident. Students will have less absences and will be more aware of what is happening in school. Students will do better academically because they are less sleepy. It is a chronic condition with severe negative consequences to the developing teenage body and its effects may be even more dire when combined with the stress of heavy schoolwork along with extracurricular activities. Professional doctors advise and recommend growing teenagers to sleep eight hours or more, however this proves to be rather very difficult with the interference of the standard school schedule starting early in the morning. Starting school at a later time may highly reduce the negative effects of sleep deprivation and possibly improve the conditions of students.…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

Kids start goofing off, laying their head on the desk, and they aren’t listening to the teacher. Students won’t produce work when they’re tired. Certainly it could be said that if school starts later, then it will end later; while this is a good point, it fails to account for the loss of sleep caused by early start times. The Scholastic Scope article explains “For one thing starting school late means dismissing school later, which leaves fewer daylight hours for after school activities like sports” (O’Neil 21). Although this is true, many students arrive at school later because they do not get enough sleep. While some might argue that starting school later means that districts will have to invest in busses and drivers, they forget that starting school later will help align school schedules with sleep schedules. For instance, the article explains “School bus schedules are arranged to meet the needs of not just one school but all schools in the district” (O’Neil 21). Even though there would need to be more buses to meet the needs for all schools, kids would be more alert in class. Some people may argue that starting school later brings the wrong message to kids. The Scholastic Scope article says “Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need to know when they enter the workforce” (O’Neil 21). In contrast, starting school later would help kids stay physically and mentally healthy. Starting school later will help students academically succeed and stay mentally…

if jimmy has good grades it makes him look good and the school will look good. so there for i do believe that a later day start would great for everyone. Also i think it would benefit the teachers because then they would have more time to get stuff done and maybe it'd actually allow them to teach better which would also allow the students to learn better and again earn better grades on class work, homework, and test. but however by doing that and getting out a hour later or possibly more then that it will also give teens and kids less time outside during the day when the sun is up to get something's done and pretty much students and teachers would be living in the dark because you'd always be in school during the day. but still for better grades and more…

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…
