Edgar Sawtelle Essay
Through the whole story Edgar has been alone trying to find out how his father died. If he just let someone know or asked for help he wouldn’t have to deal with this problem alone. He’s been walking around with this guilt and anger inside him. If he told his mother about his concerns, she would want to help find out also.
Correspondingly Edgar had his feelings and emotions bottled in. “Things would be changing right now if your father were alive, Edgar. That's just life. You can fight it or you accept it.” He was angry with himself, his mother, and most of all Claude. He blamed himself for his father’s death. “Edgar, there's a difference between missing him and wanting nothing to change." And because of these events his relationship with his mother has diminished. And having Claude and Trudy’s intimate relationship doesn’t make it better. If Edgar told Trudy of his suspicions, she would want to help with the problem.
If Edgar told Trudy, her trust with Claude would wither away. The house would be edgy; Trudy wouldn’t want to do anything with Claude. She wouldn’t want to sleep with him anymore. Their relationship would be a mess. She would want to help Edgar. Resulting in Claude being kicked out or going back to jail. Edgar and Trudy’s relationship would strengthen and recover. "A person communicates by giving as well as taking, by expressing what is inside"
Conversely, If Edgar did tell his mother the story would be much different. He wouldn’t have to run away from everything. Dr. Papineau would be alive and breathing. Edgar wouldn’t have to try to survive in the woods and steal food from cabins. Trudy wouldn’t trust Claude and their relationship would be over. If Edgar did say something, Trudy wouldn’t have to deal with losing her only child.
