Edgar Allan Poe's Death Caused By Rabies
Poe’s Death caused by Rabies Poe was a mysterious and interesting person. He had died, no one really knows how or why. Yet there are theories. Poe’s theories were alcoholism and rabies. He was showing signs and symptoms of both. I believe he died of rabies because he had stopped drinking and had many symptoms. The weather was bad, which could have contributed to infection. “This exploration is consistent with prematurely, with the weather at this time.” (pg. 187 by Kenneth Silverman) The weather was cold and Poe did not have warm clothes. “Poe was found wearing someone else’s clothes.” (pg. 188 by New York Times) He was found on Lombard street. He was wearing warmer clothes and a coat. In this article it talks about the weather, it may have contributed to Poe getting rabies. (pg. 188 by New York Times) Being so, Poe could have gotten rabies. He did not have warm …show more content…
“He had all the symptoms of encephalitic rabies.” (pg. 187 by New York Times) It was said by Dr. Henry Wilde, he treats rabies at Chulalongkorn University Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. “After an infection, the symptoms can take up to a year to appear.” (pg. 187 by New York Times) At the moment, people were saying Poe did not have rabies, but they may not have given it time. “Almost everyone who has come forth with a theory has offered no proof.” (pg. 188 by New York Times) If almost everyone did not have proof, then they don’t really know, but I can elaborate, he died of rabies, seeing he has all the symptoms. In closing, it is clear that Poe’s death was most likely caused by rabies. With all of the witness accounts, and information provided from experts, there is no way that Poe’s death could have been from alcoholism. Furthermore, Poe had all the symptoms of rabies. Finally, the weather was bad, which would have made him more susceptible to infections like rabies. Poe was mysterious and interesting which is ironic because he had a mysterious and interesting

After carefully examining Edgar Allan Poe’s conditions, I have come to the conclusion that Poe fell victim to a gang engaging in cooping and later died of alcohol poisoning. The Smithsonian Magazine states that Poe had a high intolerance to alcohol, so the reward given to him by the gang members likely influenced his death. Not only was cooping a popular practice in Baltimore at the time, Poe was found wandering about the streets near a voting poll where cooping was practiced. He was wearing second hand clothes, which were meant to pose as a disguise. As stated by the University of Maryland, Poe had a long history with the abuse of alcohol and opiate drugs, but he hadn't consumed any alcohol within six months before his death. Knowing his…

On October 3, 1849, Edgar was found in the bathroom at the Gunnell’s Hall, a public house that was being used as a polling place for an election. The magazine editor, Joseph Snodgrass, sent Poe to the Washington College Hospital, where he spent his last days in and out of consciousness, far away from home, and surrounded by nothing but strangers. They were never able to explain what happened to him to cause any of this. On October 7, 1849, only at the age of…

His most well know works showcased his depression, in both The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat he showed how his sadness had driven him to insanity. In both these stories, the unnamed narrator, Poe says that he has an unexplainable hatred toward something in The Tell Tale Heart he when contemplating why he wanted the old man dead he stated “He had the eye of a vulture -- a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold” this shows that the narrator is not mentally stable as he wants to kill a man just because of the way his eye…

According to the researcher and writer of “Poe’s Death is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” Dr. R Michael Benitez believes it was because of rabies. Dr. Benitez states in his article that Poe was indeed hallucinating, and shouting at imaginary companions (187-188). Also, when woken up one day Poe refused to drink alcohol and could only drink water with great difficulty (187). Dr. Benitez also states that is a common case of rabies because “Rabies victims frequently exhibit hydrophobia or a fear for water because it is painful to swallow” (187). Poe didn’t know where he was, and couldn’t remember anything as well. Dr. Benitez also states when Poe came to him he was not drunk, and there was no evidence of him being bitten. Statistics show that most human rabies victims do not remember being bitten, and bites takes about a year to appear…

In a letter Benedetto wrote he states, “Dr. Benitez admits the primary weakness of his theory- lack of evidence of a bite or scratch” (Benedetto 189). Dr. Benitez’s statement of there being a lack of a bite or scratch shows that rabies could not be an option for Poe’s death. Robert Benedetto explains that Poe’s cat, Caterina, Showed no signs of rabies (189). Without any signs of rabies on his beloved cat, Caterina proves that Poe’s cat did not give him rabies. As said in Benedetto’s letter, “Dr. R. Michael Benitez, an assistant professor of medicine at Maryland University Medical Center, is wrong to ascribe the death of Edgar Allan Poe to rabies through animal infection than to the traditional maintained caused alcoholism (Benedetto 189). Dr. R. Michael Benitez was wrong to assign Poe’s death to rabies with the lack of proper evidence. With no evidence that proves that Poe died from rabies it is wrong to label the cause of from…

First, Poe died from excessive alcohol poisoning because there is not much evidence that supports the face that he died from rabies. When Poe was brought into the hospital, there was no evidence of an animal bite or scratch, a sign that the patient might have rabies. Additionally, rabies and alcohol poisoning share some similar symptoms, such as delirium, a half-concious and dream-like state, so it is hard to tell if it was rabies.…

The decision I made about the cause of Edgar Allan Pope's death was the right decision because I had evidence of why my theory was correct and my peers concluded some of the same things in our socratic seminar. My reasoning is that in my research I found that there were many things I could link to his death to suicide, which is what I concluded. This is shown by the quote on www.historytoday.com " Charles Baudelarie described Edgar Allan Poe's death as 'almost a suicide, a suicide prepared for a long time' (Cavendish). This supports my claim because it shows that others think he had been planning his death.…
