Eddie Rios: Team Case Study
If I was going to shadow a person in my dream job I would follow Eddie Rios, a cheerleading coach from “The California All-stars” gym. Eddie has been a coach of many winning teams and that is why I would choose to follow him. All of his teams have been very successful every year. Eddie Rios is the coach of a four time Worlds champion team that is known all around the world. This specific team works day in and day out to be on top all year long. To prepare for this experience, first I would study how he chooses to coach his teams. Second, I would ask a few of the cheerleaders what about their coach keeps them coming back to that gym. Lastly, I would watch videos of his teams to look at how they compare to others in technique and excitement.

Both of the authors from these essays struggled when they first come to America. Each of them had their own struggles with adjusting to the American culture, but they also had a lot of things in common as well. Tony Nunez really had a difficult time with not only speaking the English language but also understanding her teacher and peers. Tony had to come to school earlier than any of her friends for extra help with English. Often times, she felt embarrassed in front of her peers because she did not understand the American jokes or the assemblies. Tony often said that her struggles were different from Elizabeth's because Tony was an immigrant, and Elizabeth was a native of the U.S. Elizabeth struggled with not wanting to learn the Chinese…

I read the book Win Forever by Pete Carroll. I chose this book because of the tremendous success that Pete has had in his career as a coach. I wanted to be able to emulate what he has had in his football career into my career as a cheerleading coach. Since this is only by second year as coach this would be the time where I can learn from other peoples mistakes and victories.…

Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…

I did not know him well and only knew he was a coach. I saw him periodically throughout that year and gave quick exchanges with him as I walked through the hall. Then sophomore year came around and he was now my full time coach. This is when I really got to know Jenkins and ever since then I have had a good relationship with him. One thing that stands out to me about him is his passion he shows for the game of football and for being around kids. Everyday he is out on the football field, whether it be practice or game day, he cherishes it like today is his last. As a player, this means a lot because it shows how important we are to him and just how much he cares about the team and us in general. Another thing that shows the magnitude of his character is the bonds he forms with players. Some coaches are just there to coach football and not be connected with the players while others, like Jenkins, engages with us everyday on more than a football level. He cares about our personal lives and is there to offer guidance whenever. He truly cares about his players and that shows through his efforts to connect with…

My cheer team, Spirit Celebration, practiced almost every night for the last month and could practically perform our routine in our sleep. This competition is what we prepared for all season. As our team gathers together, we stretch listening to our music over and over reviewing the routine in our minds. As we walk to the practice gym we glance at the other teams and laugh when they mess up. We performed our routine on the warm up mat perfectly. Walking to the on-deck area, we talk among ourselves with not a worry in the world. As we stand on deck we prayed not only to hit a clean routine but to have fun and that no would one get hurt. The emcee announces, “Performing now from Richardson, Texas, Spirit Celebration”, and it’s time to compete. The lights are bright and I can see nothing beyond the blue performance mat but black spots. The music starts and the crowd goes wild blowing air horns, banging wooden blocks together and trying to make as much noise as possible…

Starting from the introduction to the relationships currently held with the fellow cheer squad; also known as cheer try-outs. My enthusiasm for wanting to be a CAU panther cheerleader curved my ability to judge characters during the first days of rehearsal. But once the final verdict came to be on the roster for the squad for the upcoming season, as if the façade of benevolent role models had diminished, thus revealing the true dominating alliances that quickly became apparent. It became a rivalry of “new “girls vs. “old” girls with me being herded into the inferior group. The returning members having the upper hand in any cheer decision. Being that they have more knowledge of the material making the “old” girls far more qualified to be in their position. This gives them the leverage to mistreat and in many cases blatantly disrespect the new members as strengthening exercises. Hazing is the true word for it.…

No matter what kind of day I have had or what day it is, cheerfulness and excitement springs up and carries me during, before and after the games. My passion for dance has also allowed me to create many choreographies for my school, such as a dance routine for our school’s panther pride theme song, football and basketball cheers, and chants, and entertainment performances during games’ timeouts. Many people fail to realize the true purpose and beauty behind cheering for it revolves around the art of choreography. My viewpoint of cheerleading goes beyond the fancy bow, the shell crop top, the socks, the skirt, and the tennis shoes. As I move with much enthusiasm and avidity, I become the uniform. Even though cheering has been something I have done for ten years of my life, I challenge myself to become a better cheerleader every…

Confidence is a big deal when it comes to being a cheerleader it is a required characteristic that is built up within the sport itself. Before cheerleading I was the quiet, timid girl just trying not to make eye contact with anyone. Now I am outgoing and talkative because cheerleading helped find my confidence by forcing me to become open with my coaches and teammates. Also, the moment my uniform was on, my head was held high with a smile on my face. My choice of becoming a cheerleader showed who I really am and revealed my true identity of being an outgoing,…

Another very important aspect of college sports is the experience level of many of the players. I’ve been cheerleading since the beginning of my eighth grade year up until the end of my senior year. I attended a few cheerleading camps during my high school summer years, because I had the time, and enjoyed what I was doing. By attending camp I was given a chance to be seen by recruiters. Recruiting camps also allow you to…

Over the years, I've cheered for multiple teams. Furthermore, all of the teams I have been on are filled with unique and diverse people. However, the most important thing is that you can trust all of your team mates. Trust is vital for all teams that you are a part of. Whether it is football, basketball, lacrosse, et cetera. If the team doesn't have trust, regardless of talent, it will not be a winning team. Everyone is at risk during any time while cheerleading to be injured and you have to trust everyone around you that they will try their best to keep you and themselves as safe as possible. Also, when you are on a team, you get the chance to become closer to the people who are around you. You get to practice with your team, you compete with your team, and you perform with your team. Sooner or later you end up closer than you once were. That is my favorite part of being on a team. Normally, by the end of a season you all have grown to be a cheer family that are still going to be close even after the season is…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…
