1. Explain the operation of an encoder. (1 point)
Encoding is used to generate a coded output (such as BCD or binary) from a singular active numeric input line.
2. What does it mean when an encoder is a priority encoder? (1 point)
A priority encoder is when two or more inputs are active simultaneously, and the input with the highest priority is represented on the output, with input line I7 having the highest priority.
3. Describe one practical application that uses encoder. (1 point)
An encoder is used in most wireless devices such as garage door openers to help filter out interference from other devices.
4. Explain the operation of a decoder. (1 point)
Decoding is the process of converting some code (Such as binary,BCD or hex) into a singular active output representing its numeric value. A decoder is made up of a combination of logic gates that produces a HIGH at one of the 10 outputs, based on the levels of four inputs.
5. Describe one practical application that uses a decoder. (1 point)
Through the use of Encoders and Decoders you can filter out interference signals from other devices such as when talking about a remote control. When using a wireless remote control system it is desirable to have a way of filtering out or ignoring those unwanted signals to prevent false data from being received. A simple way to accomplish this is to use an encoder IC at the transmitter and a decoder IC at the receiver. The encoder generates serial codes that are automatically sent three times and must be received at least twice before data is accepted as valid by the decoder circuit

6. Search through datasheets for the 74148 device to find an application note that shows how to cascade two 74148 encoders to create one 16-to-4 line priority encoder. Draw the schematic for the 16-to-4 line priority encoder. (8 points) (NOT SURE WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR I ASSUME THIS?)

7. Interpret a datasheet for the

Message Encoding involves converting the information the host wishes to send into the appropriate medium for transmission. Messages sent across networks are converted down into bits by the sending host and then encoded into a pattern of sounds, light waves, or electrical impulses, depending on the network medium over which the bits are being transmitted.…

    Coding Theory Case Study

What is Coding Theory? “Coding theory is the study of the properties of codes and their fitness for a specific application. Codes are used for data compression, cryptography, error-correction and more recently also for network coding. Codes are studied by various scientific disciplines – such as information theory, electrical engineering, mathematics, and computer science – for the purpose of designing efficient and reliable data transmission methods. This typically involves the removal of redundancy and the correction (or detection) of errors in the transmitted data.” (Coding Theory, 2010) There are many aspects that go into the composition of coding theory such as error detecting, error correcting, hamming distance, perfect codes, generator matrices, parity check matrices and hamming codes all of which will be discussed here.…

Data transfer between the RFID tag and RFID reader happens by a process called coupling. Coupling happens either electromagnetically (backscatter) or magnetically (inductive). Inductively coupled systems have a short range and are used in applications such as access control. Backscatter technology is usually used in supply chain inventory tracking and asset management. RFID readers are sometimes referred to as interrogators. Interrogators allow the user to read and write data to compatible tags. The readers have a transmitter, receiver, microprocessor, memory, communication ports and optional input/output channels to control external sensors, actuators and annunciators. The transmitter is used to transmit electromagnetic signals using the reader antennae. Signals are absorbed by the RFID tags in their receiving range and energize integrated circuits to transmit a return response. The…
