Ecstasy: A Short Story
Oz used to have a problem with putting liquid ecstasy into children’s drinks. He used to work in the custodial department at a school. During the lower school lunch hour his job was to set out the milk for all the children. Every carton of milk he put out, he would put a teaspoon of liquid ecstasy into it. These were little kids, so no one would ever notice if they were acting out of the ordinary. Two months later his friend Tido went to his house.
Tido: Hey man what you been up to?
Oz: Great man, how have you been?
Tido: Pretty good, so I heard about this great party that we can go to.
Oz: Sweet man well lets check it out.
Tido: Alright, we can take my car. Since you don’t have one you loser!
Oz: It’s not my fault I don’t

The school board is no longer certain fiction books and novels have a place in today’s curriculum. I disagree with this argument due to the following reasons. Oscar wilde once said ‘’ Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” This quote meaning when life imitates art, reality reflects what had previously been expressed in art (or literature, drama, etc). In many cases that is not always a good thing. For example, in the book “Crank” written by Ellen Hopkins; the innocent, adolescent main character Kristina Gorge struggles of drug abuse.…

Rashi K. Shukla’s “Methamphetamine: A Love Story” could be a textbook itself about social problems. Many different concepts discussed in “Social Problems: Community, Policy, and Social Action” can be observed through the lives of only 33 participants from Oklahoma. Each adult described the world of methamphetamine in necessary, but excruciating detail. They told of traumatic childhoods, the impact of the drug on their mental well being, and the burden it had on those closest to them. They also explained how they broke free from its tempting grasp, what type of treatment they received, and how their lives were forever altered by their involvement with methamphetamines.…

After World War II ended, the age of baby-booming and urban sprawling began. During this time, many American soldiers came home from the war; married, and had five or six children. This created the largest generation ever. Could this new generation change the social world of America? In 1964, most of the baby-boomer's children were in their late teens. This was the beginning of a major social change in the United States. With the birth of rock-n-roll not far in the past, and a growing liberalism of the normally conservative American Society, it is no wonder that a powerful hallucinogenic drug called LSD gained so much popularity.…

Huxley writes about the usage of drugs to say that drugs should not be used to cope with your emotions, and they come with consequences. The people in the BNW society use soma to cope with their problems. In the book it states, “…felt in her pocket for her soma… Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais.” (Huxley 111) The people in the Brave New World society take soma whenever they get a bad feeling like its nothing instead of learning to put up with them. When they do this they are not experiencing all aspects in life such as the hardship life brings. They also don’t know the consequences that taking drugs like soma gives you. This is evident when the book says, ‘”But aren’t you shortening her life by giving her so much?”… “In one sense, yes,” Dr. Shaw admitted.’ (Huxley 154) The people in the Brave New World society, take soma, which is encouraged by the government, to get away from the reality of life and feel happy and/or relaxed. Doing this, by taking soma so often every day, the people in the Brave New World society are actually substantially shortening their lives. Thus, Huxley is trying to say that the usage of drugs will cause you to not experience all of life and can bring death to its users.…

In a perfect world, eliminating the demand for illegal substances would unilaterally resolve the drug problem eventually, although in the short run we would still have the challenge of releasing the addicted from the grips of their habits. Absent demand, the impetus for the drug trade -- profit -- would disappear. So, too, would the social and health costs of drug abuse. In reality, there will always be a demand for drugs. Some portion of every population will continue to use illegal drugs to escape reality, experience pleasure, follow peer pressure, chase a misguided sense of adventure, or rebel against authority, among other self-destructive reasons. To counter these proclivities, prevention activities must forestall the use of illegal drugs,…

“Please put your hands on your head” I was twenty-eight and never thought I would ever hear those words. At least not directed at me. I was standing in my home-town HEB pharmacy waiting on the lady you give me a prescription that I had written myself. My daughter, Taylor was running around the store like a wild banshee. At that moment all I could think about was what he said right before he sent me in to my execution. He said “Everything is going to be fine, just stay calm and keep your cool”. There is a moment in time when your whole life changes direction, sometimes for good sometimes for bad. I believe at that moment my life changed its course.…
