Abstract
India’s cities are growing rapidly, resulting in a wide variety of environmental stresses. In this paper an integrated approach using satellite data and GIS techniques in conjunction with socio-economic data is used to assess urban environmental issues in Delhi. Delhi’s current population of 13.8 million is growing rapidly, and is projected to reach 22.4 million by 2021. The issues addressed in this paper include: changes in land use/land cover

(1992-2004); changes in surface temperatures for 2001 and 2005; solid waste generation, collection and its management; and industrial pollution (i.e. air, waste water and noise). The results show that Delhi is developing very rapidly mainly in the west, south-west and eastern sides. The study shows that a 122% increase in highly dense residential area was recorded during last decade in Delhi. There was a reduction (17%) in agricultural land because of urban expansion in the fringe areas. The pollution load has increased in terms of air, water, noise, and solid waste generation

    Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of a country’s population the lives in urban as opposed to rural areas.     One of the main purposes of adopting the LEED rating system is to help real estate planners and developers make sustainable decisions when planning new construction or restoration projects. This study shows how GIS can be used as a decision making support tool for accessing location and transportation and site suitability in the LEED green rating scale, which uses very similar methods to a study done by Dabaieh et al. and Yamany et al. (2016). LEED has many different rating systems available for different projects, these include new construction, existing buildings, commercial interiors, core and shell, homes, neighborhood development, schools and retail (Sharifi and Murayama 2013). Within each of these systems is categories that focus on specific criteria. These categories according to the 2013 V4 score card, which is the newest system and the one that will be used in this study are Location and Transportation, Site Suitability, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environment Quality, Innovation and Regional Priority.     In his book Urban Geography, Michael Pacione, discusses the “Future City-Cities of the Future”. In his analysis there are several principles that must be included in the future city in order for it to strive and be successful, “by 2025 65 percent of the world’s population will be in urban areas” (Pacione 2005) The need for the city of the next 100 years to be sustainable in all aspects is paramount for its success and its citizens to live in peace and harmony. The factors that will play a large part in deciding the fate of our future cities are addressing population growth, the economics of cities, or making cities economically competitive, the effective managing and creation of various modes of transportation and mobility and managing the largest pollutant most inefficient parts of of our cities: buildings. All while maintaining high ecological and environmental standards including proper reduction and disposal of waste . The city of the next 100 years must be successful in managing the impacts of all of these stated areas.     The study of urban spread has raised a controversial dispute as certain issues have been avoided (McLoughlin, 1993). In Searle’s (2004) paper, demonstrates the restrictions placed on high-density areas due to the inability to fund urban growth. The fundamental issue impacted by urban population is the abundance of transport and social facilities that are present in many metropolitan areas. On a similar note, increases in traffic use and infrequent services of public transport systems may impact the development of urbanization. The higher demand in quality services may consume more land area, ultimately reducing vegetation harming the environment (Betanzo, 2007). It is clear that there is a link between population growth and environmental damage, in which minor steps must be taken into account to reduce negative impacts. Furthermore, the increase in high-rise buildings and the loss of green space in high-density areas are strong factors that influence urban heat island effect. The increase in climate is proportional to energy use for cooling indoors which ultimately impacts global warming (Grimm et al, 2008). Urban heat island effect is also strongly impacted by stormwater runoff due to the extension of impervious surfaces. In contrast, houses in outer regions are assumed to reduce environmental damage due to having individual gardens. These gardens can significantly decrease the effect of urban heating while absorbing more rainwater to decrease stormwater flow. According to one study by Burchell and Listokin (1996) contended that high-density due to residential and commercial development used 45 percent less land; and cost 25 percent less for roads, 15 percent less for utilities, 5 percent less for housing and 2 percent less for other public expenses than low-density development.…

    It is of concern that while pressures of growth in Indian urban centers are leading to fast paced developments that are changing the face of the cities at a rapid rate, the quality of the urban environment is diminishing due to the lack of proper policy and development frameworks. It is important to note that the last development plan for Mumbai was prepared in the year 1981 and adopted 13 years later in 1994. A new development plan 18 years later has only now begun development. This lack of planning has resulted in growth that has been adhoc and piecemeal mostly responding to narrow private interests with no consideration for the public realm elements like good streetscapes, consistent block sizes, regulated street walls, well defined sidewalks and well developed open spaces. Large land agglomerations are destroying the existing city fabric and resulting in more and more gated communities, leading to a democratic cityscape turning into a composition of private enclaves. Comprehensive planning and regulations which integrate good urban design principles have been lacking to say the least. Development of integrated progressive plans which promote good urban design principals and help define a physical urban environment which is democratic, enriching, aesthetic and enjoyable is critical in this environment.…
