Essay Question: Individuals, firms, governments, and countries are faced with choices because all resources are scarce. A production possibility curve (see below) measures the maximum combination of outputs that can be achieved from a given number of inputs. In practice economists use a production possibility curve with two goods to explain the concept of opportunity cost.
In the example below the two goods that a country can produce are health care and education. 15

Use the graph above to answer the following questions:
a. How many units can be produced if a country uses all of its resources on health care? b. How many units can be produced if a country uses all of its resources on education? c. If a country is currently producing 11 units of health care and 16 units of education, what is the opportunity cost of producing 5 more units of education? While a production possibility curve describes the possible combinations of output that can be produced with a given set of inputs, it does not tell us who should receive, and in what amount, the health care and education that gets produced. Write an essay of at least 300 words but no more than 600 words in length which discusses the social justice implications of how to distribute the health care and education that gets produced.

“Medical care in the United States is a trillion-dollar business, with an estimated average of $7,556 spent per person in 2007. 1 The 309 million citizens of the United States received services from more than 4,000 hospitals, 30,000 nursing homes, 800,000 physicians, 2.8 million registered nurses, and 9 million other health care workers. Individuals paid $262 billion, or 11 percent of total funding; private (mostly employer-based) health insurance paid 35 percent; and government, the largest payer, paid 47 percent (19 percent Medicare, 15 percent Medicaid, 13 percent other government programs. The remaining 7 percent of total health care financing came from a variety of other private sources (philanthropy, industrial clinics, interest and rental income of providers). The largest use of funds was the $794 billion spent on hospital care, 34 percent of the total.”(Getzen, 2006, Chapter 1). There are some terms that are essential to understanding the basics of healthcare economics and those are, quality, cost and technology. Though these may stand alone, in health care they are often interdependent and inter-related.…

First of all, let us define what health is. These can be two ways to define it: 1) Negative: the absence of disease 2) Positive: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.” (World Health Organization, 1946).Therefore we can outline two aims of health policy: to improve health and to reduce health inequalities. In terms of the first definition, the US health care system is efficient. In terms of the world-accepted definition, the second one, the US health care system is expensive and in many cases not efficient. Let us analyze the relation between costs and effectiveness in this system. First of all let us trace the development and progress of both health care systems. The basis for current health care system was established after the World war II, when private doctors were serving most of the market.…

Each point on the production possibilities curves represents some maximum satisfaction or outcome of two products. The graph shows that the customers must either choose which product suits their desires. More cars means less food and vice versa. This will therefore indicate that the total supplies of resources are limited, thus the total amounts of cars and food that our economy is capable of producing are limited. Limited resources mean a limited satisfaction. A choice must be made to as what quantities of each product do the customers want to be produced. This shows us that the customers cannot have maximum satisfaction of both cars and food to satisfy their wants and this is shown on the Graph…
