This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature. Scrooge exclaims, " Come back to the butcher and I'll give you a shilling. Come back in two minutes and ill give you a crown!" this show Scrooge truly overcomes the was he acts. Scrooge was all about the money- never wanted to share. This was that Scrooge did NOT appreciate anything he had in his life. Throughout the beginning of the story, Scrooge took everything for granted. Of course, Scrooge could not realize this because his greed for money took over his soul. He was so caught up in making money, that he did not take a look around him to understand that he was blessed with a loyal clerk, a prosperous company, and a jolly relative still alive. The motif that Scrooge didn’t appreciate him clearly ties back with the chosen passage. This is because when Marley comes to tell Scrooge about the three ghosts, the ghosts will turn him into a more cheerful, appreciative, person. This is also the first part in the story when Scrooge has an opportunity to realize that Marley was such a great friend and partner to him.…

A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens is a significant novella written in the Victorian era. The protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge is used to demonstrate the upper class society and their attitude towards the poor. Throughout this redemption story, Dickens combines a descriptions of hardships faced by the poor with a heart-felt sentimental celebration of the Christmas season. The novella contains a dramatic and comic element as well as a deep felt moral theme. The text promotes the values of Ebenezer Scrooge, delving into his past, present and supposed future as well as contrasting between the enriching and depressing story; specifically evaluating the authors message, the Cratchit family, Scrooges nature and alternatively the ghostly circumstances outlined in the parable. The main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, is presented as being a very cruel, selfish and harsh man. However, he changes throughout the novella due to significant events. He remembers how he was rejected, and then he feels regretful and sad for what he had done and what might happen because of him. In the second stave it says, “The school is not quite deserted,” said the Ghost. “A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still” (33). This depicts that Scrooge had no one that really loved him. He didn’t have any real friends or people to talk too. Scrooge thinks about what he has done, and says regretfully, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something” (36). This demonstrates that Scrooge knows that he has made mistakes, and is starting to become a better person, with the Ghosts’ help. Scrooge becomes sad, finally thinking about someone other than himself. “Spirit,” said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live.” “I see a vacant seat,” replied the Ghost, “In an old chimney corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die” (65). This shows that Scrooge really does care about other people. He is recognizing his emotions for other people…

In Charles Dickens’ novella ‘A Christmas Carol’, Ebenezer Scrooge’s transforms himself from an undesirable, self-centred old man to a gentleman with characterisations to exemplify that the most valuable things in life are those which are not tangible; family, friends, love and happiness. The protagonist had the ability to help the unfortunate and deprived Cratchit’s; he also had the obligation to help society, consequently altering into a generous, giving man. Scrooge’s decision to change was also purely selfish, due to the thought of losing his wealth.…

In 'A Christmas Carol', Dickens represents Scrooge as a 'squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner' who is against Christmas and happiness and values money, yet given a chance to redeem his fate. Marley's Ghost has come to warn Scrooge to change his avarice ways or he, too, will be condemned to wander the Earth in the pain he has caused and the happiness he cannot share, weighed down by 'the chain [he] forged in life' which he has made 'link by link, and yard by yard'. Dickens uses the metaphor to contribute to the burden Marley carries because of the selfish ways he has acted in his life on Earth. Scrooge is shaken by what has happened to his sole friend, who offers no console and furthermore exemplifies his fate by showing him the phantoms who, like Marley, wore chains and were linked together, unable to be free as 'misery with them all was, clearly, that they sought to interfere, for good…and had lost the power for ever' as for the dead, it is too late for anything, which is the message given to Scrooge. The Spirit of Christmas Past visits to reminisce Scrooge's unhappy childhood as a 'solitary child, neglected by his friends'. Scrooge pities himself, and wishes that he had given something to the boy 'singing a Christmas Carol at [his] door last night', which becomes his first step towards his transformation. When Scrooge is shown his fiancé upset that 'another idol has replaced [her]'…a golden one', he recollects how greedy he was and his true values is reflected.…
