1. What are the ethical responsibilities of an organisation such as eBay?
The ethical responsibilities of an organisation such as eBay are different from those of an organisation that directly sells their services or products to another organisation or individual. Organisations like eBay are merely a platform, which enables other organisations or individuals to trade with one another.
Therefore, organisations like eBay are responsible for safeguarding the fair and secure procedures that are to be followed by their users, rather than their own actions/business. This is one of their ethical responsibilities and is stated in the case; “eBay needs to root out dishonest traders and take anti-fraud actions”. However, these actions may not violate the privacy of their users, which is also one of their ethical responsibilities. In addition, eBay needs to ensure that all proceedings that take place on their website, are in line with regulations and/or international law. It is their ethical responsibility to ensure that their platform is not being used for illegal purposes.
