Eat Drink Man Woman
Foreign films intimidate many people; it could be the culture shock, or it could be the hesitance to reading subtitles for two hours. Despite these setbacks, foreign films are some of the best made and Eat Drink Man Woman, directed by Ang Lee is no exception. Eat Drink Man Woman offers many elements of a great movie such as excellent filming techniques, interesting and unique characters, and unanticipated plot twists. Eat Drink Man Woman focuses on the story of a retired chef and his three daughters. The oldest daughter, Jia-Ning is a Christian schoolteacher that is somewhat of an old maid. Jia-Jen, the middle child, would probably be classified as the sexy one, and works as an airline executive, and Jin-Rong, the youngest, works at an American fast food restaurant. For example, one would expect the "sexy, accomplished middle-child" to be the one out of the house first, but that is by no means what actually happens. First, Jin-Rong announces her pregnancy and that's she's moving in with her boyfriend (that the family didn't even know about!). The entire family drops their jaws in astonishment. The next surprising twist was a very surprising one. Jia-Ning, announces that she has eloped! Keep in mind that this old maid has never had a (real) boyfriend and that the family didn't even know she was dating anyone. They drop their jaws again. The biggest shock of the movie was Mr. Chu's marriage announcement. He had been spending a lot of time at Mrs. Liang's apartment, so naturally everyone thought he would be proposing to her. When he makes a toast to her, everyone's fears become reality, but it turns out that he is actually asking Mrs. Liang for her much younger daughter's hand!
