Products
The products manufactured by Eastman Chemical Company are categorized in five key sectors. Defined by the end use of the products, these sectors provide a basic overview of the types of products produced. Included in the description of each sector is a brief summary of the type of consumer or industrial goods that utilize the products manufactured by Eastman.[5]
Coatings, adhesives, specialty polymers and inks
Utilizing raw materials including propane, ethane, butane, high sulfur coal, natural gas, wood pulp and acetone, Eastman produces several products in this category. Products include cellulosic polymers, cellulose esters, adhesion promoters, Texanol ester alcohol, solvents, hydrocarbon resins, rosin resins, resin dispersions, and polymer raw materials. These products are used for a variety of purposes ranging from packaging to automotive paints to disposable diapers.
Fibers
Manufactured from high sulfur coal and wood pulp, Eastman makes acetate tow, acetate yarn and acetyl chemical products. These fibers are used in apparel and home furnishings as well as cigarette filters and industrial applications.
Performance chemicals and intermediates
Raw materials including propane, ethane, high sulfur coal and natural gas are utilized by Eastman to produce acetic anhydride, acetaldehyde, oxo derivatives, plasticizers, glycols, polymer intermediates, diketene derivatives, specialty ketones, and specialty anhydrides. These products are used for numerous purposes, including toys, household products, textiles and more.
Polymers
Paraxylene, ethylene glycol, purified terephthalic acid (PTA), propane, and ethane are used by Eastman to manufacture polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers and polyethylene products including low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), as well as a clear amorphous thermoplastic in glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG). Eastman also produces a BPA-free polymer in Tritan Copolyester.

    Nylon Lab Report

Finally, in order to confirm that nylon was formed a comparison needs to be made between the IR spectrum for the unknown product, as well as the frequencies of methanol and of the unknown plastic. Knowing that methanol has a similar backbone structure as nylon, carbon-hydrogen bonds and carbon-oxygen bonds are present within the structure. The unknown plastic, however, does not contain any of the carbon-oxygen bonds, carbon-hydrogen bonds, or nitrogen-hydrogen bonds. Methanol had major peaks at approximately 3300 cm-1, 2900 cm-1, and 2750 cm-1, which were relatively similar to the peaks of nylon (3300 cm-1, 2950 cm-1, 2800 cm-1). However, the unknown plastic had major peaks at only about 3000 cm-1 and 2900cm-1. Overall this indicates that methanol contains the same bonds as nylon, and thus further confirms the product produced by the prescribed procedure is nylon. Due to the fact that methanol had similar peaks in comparison to nylon, it is accurate to claim that the product made during the reaction was…

A multi-division corporation had a small plastic piece fail in one of its specialty machines. The maintenance department has been asked to replace the part. However, the original manufacturer, Kaufmann Ltd., has gone out of business, and specifications for the part are unavailable. The purpose of this experiment, performed by Ryan Nelson, Peter Glascor, Eric Flowr was to determine the identity of the unknown polymer by comparing its properties to properties of other known polymers. Most likely, the part is one of the five following polymers: polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, poly(vinyl chloride). These are all extremely common, and have widespread applications in industry.…
