Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, and amongst the poorest in the world. With that being said, when an earthquake happened just kilometres away from Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, the country was hardly prepared (Fierro & Perry, n.d.). Haiti has overcome various natural disasters, including hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, and other tropical storms. Haitians expect these natural hazards to occur, due to past events and the location of the country making it inevitable. They try their best to prepare for mother nature, but there is only so much they can do given their lack of resources.
