1) Would earthquakes of similar magnitudes in different populated regions of the Earth cause approximately the same levels of damage? In your discussions, consider both geologic and human-induced factors.
The amount of damage caused by an Earthquake does not solely depend on the magnitude of the Earthquake. Factors such as population, geographic location, soil type, and the type of building material commonly used for construction in a region determine the extent of damage caused. If an Earthquake strikes a densely populated region, then life loss and property damage will be high. If an Earthquake of a similar or even higher magnitude strikes a region with a relatively low population, then life loss and property damage will be lower. The 6.4 Richter scale Earthquake (1993) in the State of Maharashtra, India and the 8.3 Richter scale Earthquake (2006) in Kuril Islands, Japan are examples that come to mind. With stone houses and a population of over 2 million, the Earthquake in Latur left nearly 8,000 people dead and brought as many as 30,000 houses to the ground. In contrast, Kuril Islands, with a population of just 17,000 and better disaster preparedness mechanisms, was able to get away with no loss of human life ,despite the fact that the Earthquake was much higher in magnitude when compared to that of Latur.

As large fractures inside Earth’s crust begin to shift, there is a release of energy inside Earth, right at the displacement (focus) point. An epicenter is nothing but the point on the surface of Earth that lies directly over the focus. It is not true that faults experiencing no active creep are safe. Fault creep refers to slow rock movement arising out of the application of constant stress over a prolonged period of time. A fault creep is a slippage that occurs alongside a fault. A fault creep may produce a small earthquake that can be detected through a seismometer. An active creep zone is one in which the most significant of displacements are likely to take place. Current absence of active creeps neither means that there is no fault creep at all, nor that there will not be any movement in future. A currently inactive fault could become active in future and cause an earthquake, so safe is not a term that one can always associate with the absence of an active creep. 3) At one time it was thought that the deep-ocean trenches at subduction zones would be a good place for disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Why is this not a good idea? Explain what can happen at a subduction zone and what might occur if the waste were buried there. (Hint: see oceanic-continental convergence.) Over the years, different options have been considered as suitable permanent repositories for disposing high-level radioactive waste. The intent has been to find a way of permanently isolating high-level nuclear waste from the environment used by humans. It is true that at one point in time, subduction zone trenches in deep oceans were a good option for disposing high-level radioactive waste. It was thought that sticky mud and clay at trenches in deep-open subduction zones could be ideal places to bury high-level radioactive waste. It was assumed that radioactive waste canisters deposited in such places would slowly leak, only to be bound by sticky mud and clay for several millions of years. It was expected that burying high-level radioactive waste inside a subduction zone of a deep-ocean would gradually carry waste into the mantle of Earth. Today however, this approach is not a matter of serious consideration because of the technical considerations that are in play, legal restrictions associated with Law of the Sea, and the fect that leakages could lead to widespread contamination. The fact that oceanic-continental convergence helps create geologic formations and sustain many active volcanoes of Earth mean that contamination can be a serious threat when considering the burial of high-level radioactive waste in subduction zone trenches of deep oceans.

    This lab uses earthquake data to construct profiles of two convergent boundaries: the Tonga Trench and the Peru-Chile Trench. Where two tectonic plates converge, if one or both of the plates is an oceanic lithosphere, a subduction zone will form. When crust is formed at a mid-ocean ridge, it is hot and buoyant meaning it has a low density. As it spreads away from the ridge and cools and contracts, or becomes denser, it is able to sink into the hotter underlying mantle. When two oceanic plates collide, the younger of the two plates, because it is less dense will ride over the edge of the older plate. The density of the rock that makes up the subducting plate determines the way in which a plate behaves. A plate with a greater density subducts into the mantle faster and at a steeper angle than a plate with a lower density. The age of the crust involved in the subduction also affects the rate at which it subducts. Older crust is cooler and denser therefore it suducts at a steeper angle and faster than new crust at a subduction zone. The three key features associated with a subduction zone are a deep ocean trench, a volcanic arc on the overriding plate parallel to the trench, and a plane of earthquakes, shallow near the trench and descending beneath and beyond the volcanic arc. Most earthquakes occur at tectonic plate boundaries. The largest earthquakes are associated with subduction zones because they have long continuous fault lines. The depth of its focus can classify an earthquake. Earthquake depth range is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep. Shallow earthquakes are between 0 to 70 km deep, intermediate earthquakes are between 70 to 300 km deep, and deep focus earthquakes have foci at more than 300 km.…

    Los Angeles was built on a myriad of transform faults that include Santa Monica fault, the San Fernando fault, and Northridge/Santa Barbara fault. Even though these faults are not as well-known as the San Andreas Fault, where it margins are between the Pacific and North American plates that cross Southern California. Los Angeles is sitting near at least 60 known faults. The earth still moves frequently in these smaller less known areas. One example of this is the earthquake that was focused in the Northridge area happened in January 1994. It only lasted 30 seconds registering at 6.7 on the Richter scale but the aftershocks lasted for several days afterwards. Ground displacement is the second hazard main of earthquakes. Especially if there is a building or roadway on or near the fault line. This quake alone killed 60 people, and injuring thousands.     There are also secondary effects that can be a disastrous to Los Angeles like faulting and ground ruptures, aftershocks, and fires. Earthquakes originate from the sudden movement of faults. As the faults move, in any direction, the blocks of rock on both sides of the fault will rub against each other and that cause the vibrations.     The main explanation of this fault line type means the rocks will move horizontally to the fault line. That explains the way the seismic waves will go; the seismic waves went horizontal to the San Andreas Fault line, which resulted in the earthquake hitting San Francisco. The focus mechanism is basically the same descriptive as the type of faulting. The focus mechanism is that the two plates slide past each other rubbing against each other. A visional reprehensive of this description is located at the end of this document. There was a lot of stress that was built up and released that resulted to the earthquake. Due to the Oceanic plate slipping under the continental plate, there is a ton of tension that was built up because the oceanic cannot smoothly go under the continental plate, the oceanic plate is rocky so it gets stuck easily while trying to move under the other plate. Imagine two convoy-belts moving, one moves under the other and they touch at the point the one sinks under the other. If they are smooth and lubricated they can easily move pass each other without getting stuck. But, if there is fifty rocks glued to the one going under the other, clearly it would cause distress to the machine, and cause it to get stuck. Now imagine the worker that usually controls this machine is not there to stop the machine it will keep trying to move, so there is a ton of energy built up, and then sometimes it will be able to pass a rock, but due to all that tension built up it will violently move pass the rock. That is exactly how the oceanic plate and the continental plate move, since they are so rocky and gravity does not stop, when the tension is released it causes violent earthquakes that destroy towns with no mercy.
