Earning Gap Between Men and Women
Earnings Gap Earnings gap by gender can be explained by several different theories. Varying on the individual views/opinions some theories may make more sense than others. In my opinion the one theory that best explains this gap between genders is the occupational segregation. There are some occupations that are female, and others that are male. One of the explanations for this is the discontinuity of the female participation/attachment in labor force. During their labor force participation, women would need to take time off for child bearing. In order to ensure that she still has a job when she comes back, she needs to choose a job with general skill level. As a result, the jobs that require only a general skill level and not a lot of training will generally pay less than the jobs with specialized skill and that involve a lot of training. Therefore, because women have a tendency to movie in and out of the labor force, they choose jobs that share common characteristic of general skill and training. Furthermore, the occupational segregation explains the earnings gap with the notion of gender roles. That is to say that certain jobs such a secretaries are pegged to be occupations of the females, while the jobs such as lawyers have a tendency you be viewed as male's occupation. Once explanation for this is that male occupations require aggressiveness, strength, and endurance, while the female occupations require caring, patience and empathy. In contrast the other explanation is that women choose certain occupations because of the way that they are socialized. Regardless of the explanation, traditionally the male roles had higher earnings than females. To this day the research suggests that gender role stereotypes have an influence on career choices of men and women. Also, one can say that discrimination on part of the employer played a factor in the gender earnings gap. For instance if you were hiring for a high management position in your company,

The idea that women earn less than men in the work place is no longer a subject for debate. Study after study has shown that women earn less than their male counterparts. In 1998, for every dollar a man makes, a woman earns .73 cents (CNN, 2000). Since then it has gotten better but not by much. As of 2010 women earned .79 cents to every dollar earned by men. The gender wage gap is a statistical indicator used to show the status of women 's earnings relative to men 's. This nation, unfortunately, has a history of making gender inequality legal. Laws pass early in the 20th century showed that the view that many in the country did not believe that women could not do the same amount of work that men did. This gave way to wage disparity.…

Research has shown is that occupation plays a vast role in the wage gap. There are jobs that are considered to be predominately occupied by women and some that are predominately worked by men, which of course is how some employees try to justify the difference in wages. The occupation with the widest gap in earnings is “personal financial advisers,’ with a gender earnings ratio of just 61.3 percent. (The Gender Wage Gap by Occupation 2014 and by Race and…

This essay, published by The New York Times and written by the journalist Claire Cain Miller, establishes a counter argument for the position that many people have taken on the issue of the gender pay gap. Miller and Harvard labor economist, Claudia Goldin, established the view that the pay gap is because of gender and not because of comparisons between the different jobs that males and females take. Being informed is essential to finding solutions for an issue and in this essay Miller informs her audience and shows how information can lead to meaningful solutions. “Occupations that most value long hours, face time at the office and being on call-like business, law and surgery – tend to have the widest pay gap.” Miller establishes in what occupations…

Have you ever considered that the gender wage gap can account for gender wage gap? Men and women grossing difference has been an ongoing examination. In 2010 Jingyo Suh published “Decomposition of the Change in the Gender Wage Gap” in which he conducted a study investigating determinants and characteristics of changes in the gender gap between 1989 and 2005. The 1970s and 1980s were decades of remarkable economic progress for women. After a period of stagnation in the early 1970s at the low 60 percent of the average men's wage, earnings for women in salaried full-time year-round positions grew faster than men's and narrowed the gender wage gap (Suh, 2010). Although the gap has narrowed, it is still ongoing and exists. What causes this ongoing…

For example, it is considered as a women profession being maids, secretaries, nurses or teachers meanwhile, it is considered as man profession being managers, lawyers, engineers or professors. This creates the idea that women are not able to do a “man job”, we talk specifically about women due to it is where we mostly see the occupational segregation. Even though, the rate of women taking “man” jobs has increased, there exists another problem: the pay gap between men and women. As we talk before, socialization plays a key factor in this issue. Usually women are paid less for the same job that men do because of their gender. As a patriarchal society, women are considered less important than men, even if they have the same educative level as men. After 1980, the wage rate between men and women started to equalize; however, in the 2000’s women are still earning just 76% of what man do. Why have women been paying less than men when they have the same abilities? Some of the reasons are “the idea that women should be modest while men should promote themselves, women may negotiate less strongly for pay”, “women are concentrated in lower-paying occupations”, “employers often do this out of a biased perception that whatever is done by women must be easier and not as important or the company” (The Sociology Project 2.0), even if there exist some laws that protect women against…

Roos, P. A. (1981). Sex stratification in the workplace: Male-Female differences in economic returns to occupation. Social Science Research, 10(3), 195-224. The study causes the idea that there is a large earning gap between men and women. Gender differences in earning are important because it focuses on the gender-based inequalities of power at the workplace. The author of the study used a literature review to explain the gender gap in earning, and it showed that sex segregated characteristics still remain at the occupational level. It shows that women work at low paying jobs and they are less likely to use authority in those jobs. The main reason why there are gender differences in earnings is the belief of human capital theory, and it has a huge concern with the supply side of the market. The researcher used a non-institutionalized English speaking population to explain the data for gender influenced gap in earning. The sample included 959 men and 670 women. The results showed that women are paid low wages, and are in positions of low responsibility. Even when a women reaches a higher level job, their earning is much lower than that of men. The results also show that women’s low income is mainly because of their job characteristics, in that men and women are distributed differently across jobs. Men earn more than women, mainly because women are not considered employers. The study demonstrated that the characteristics of the workers create inequality at the workplace; this is also a reason for why there is a large gap in earning between genders. Human capital theory discourages women from working and it presents women as low rent employees. They have less understanding of the mean of production. The characteristics of this research show improvement in the earnings of men and women.…

For decades now, there has been an ongoing pay gap amongst men and women. Some people say it is the woman’s choice and they made it that way, others say it is plain out sexism. To this day, there is still no definitive reason why, but the gap seems to close little by little each year. Can we contribute that to women standing up for themselves more, working harder to prove their worth, or even challenging the system? T.J. Billitteri wrote the article entitled Gender pay gap touching base on the important fact which is women working and sharing the same career title as a man are making far less money (March 14, 2008).CQ Researcher, 18, 241-264.Billitteri begins his article touching base on a large lawsuit of Ledbetter vs. Goodyear tire. Ledbetter, one of few females in her supervisory position, realized she was making $559.00 a month less than the males in the same position. She received around $3 million in back pay and damages. That case stirred up a lit of press on the pay gap issue and put emphasis on bills such as the Fair Pay Act. Recognized female state officials are pushing the enforcement of Fair Pay Acts and Equal Pay Acts more and more on Congress and the Senate still to this day. Billitteri (2008) states with those in effect men and women would have equal compensation when working in the same field. A prime example is a women working as a Chief Executive makes on average 22 percent of what a male Chief Executive makes. Looking at the 2006 U.S. Census statistics it showed “the pay gap at about 77 percent of the men’s median full-time, year-round earnings.” (Billitteri 2008). In Billitteris’ article he discusses how when hiring a female the company takes into account the possibilities for maternity leave, higher insurance needs, time off to care for children, and a raised risk for sexual harassment claims. It has become apparent that women are intimidated to seek out executive or other high paying positions…
