Problem 15 Suppose that any firm intending to produce SOMA must build an integer number of plants: 0, 1, 2,.... Building Q plants costs each firm 3.5 × Q dollars. Each plant produces one unit of SOMA. If firm 1 builds Q1 plants and firm 2 builds Q2 plants, the market price p for one unit of SOMA will be 9 − (Q1 + Q2). For example, if firm 1 builds 2 plants and firm 2 builds 4 plants, the market price will be 9 − (2 + 4) = 3 per unit. At this price firm 1 will make a profit of 2 × 3 − 2 × 3.5 = −1 while firm 2 will make a profit of 4×3−4×3.5 = −2. Assume, no firm will build more than 4 plants.…

    1. Factors that likely contributed to the oversights made by the Ernst & Young auditors during the 2004 AA Capital engagement were the fact that Orecchio was not forced to pay back the “loan” immediately. Also Stevens, the CFO had been covering for Orechhio and his loans taken out on behalf of the company. The fact that the internal auditors saw this money as a legitimate loan says that there may have been an inside job between Orechhio and the internal auditors going on, which was not noticed until Stevens went on maternity leave and Aquino stepped in.…

The topic of drugs in schools has always been one that is prevalent in society and a main concern toward protecting our youth. Billions of dollars get spent every year on drug agencies that focus on stopping the importation of drugs to America and their distribution. Some of those funds also go to anti-drug campaigning and agencies that speak to schools and young adults about the dangers of using drugs. Yet with all this money spent on drug enforcement it still seems that drugs are more prevalent in schools and everyday life more than ever. From my own personal experience and having attended both a public and private high school it was easy to find someone to buy drugs from and even easier to know people that did drugs and went to class high on something. This brings the idea of drug testing in schools to question and whether it should be done to stop drug use before it starts.…

    Onethousand Dollars

    O. Henry's short story “One Thousand Dollars” opens with a brief and polite conversation between a young man and a lawyer. The lawyer offers the young man one thousand dollars, his apparent inheritance from a recently deceased uncle. “Young Gillian,” the young man in question, chuckles at the peculiar and specific amount of his inheritance. He marvels that, had his uncle bestowed a much larger or a much smaller amount of money upon him, he would better understand the bequest. As it stands, however, he is puzzled and stunned by the legacy of one thousand dollars exactly.…
