The health and social care sector in the UK is divided into the following care providers.
1. Statutory services are set up because parliament has passed a law that requires the services to be provided to everyone e.g. maternity facilities and accident and emergency department in hospitals. Statutory settings: these settings have to be available for children to attend by law. This means that legislation has been passed which requires the government/local authorities to open them. This is the job of the secretary of state, to make sure that statutory services are provided.
2. Private organisations are run on a profit making basis and are businesses e.g. private
Residential. Private settings: these settings make a profit from providing their services, like a business. They are inspected to ensure that the health and safety of the children are maintained.
3. Voluntary organisations are run on a non-profit making basis e.g. Barnardos provides care for children and young people. Voluntary settings: these settings are provided by organisations such as charities. They rely on most or all of their funding from donations. They are also
