The Chauvet Cave revealed, among other things, that art may not have developed linearly as scholars previously assumed. The Chauvet Cave, though at least 10,000 years older than the other discoveries, contains surprisingly sophisticated art, by far the most realistic of all the other examples of cave art discovered so far. The use of modeling, or shading, to give the art the appearance of volume has yet to be found in any other caves. The fact that the art in the Chauvet Cave predates other, more simplistic discoveries seems to suggest that, rather than the level of sophistication paralleling the evolution of man, the use of naturalism, modeling, and illusionism was most likely determined by cultural factors or even varying amounts of skill…

When it came to building dwellings, there were pictures to get ideas from, no blue prints to follow and they couldn’t walk around the neighborhood and see what the Johnson’s were doing. When mankind stopped living in caves they couldn’t call up the nearest construction company and tell the contractor to build a 3 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms. They had to make their dwellings from scratch…

Cave paintings are paintings found on cave walls and ceilings, and especially refer to those of prehistoric origin. The earliest such art in Europe dates back to the Aurignacian period, approximately 40,000 years ago. Evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations; they speak of stories and things that may have happened in their life. Also surprisingly nearly 340 caves have now been discovered in France and Spain that contain art from prehistoric times.…
