E4WSA Social Actions
The chosen social action was to set awareness for E4WSA (Essentials for Women South Australia) which is a non-profit organisation that aids for homeless women who don’t have access everyday hygienic products. I was in a 6-member group and our main goal was to promote the organisation and hopefully get a few donations of feminie hygienic products such as tampons, pads and clean underwear from the public to give to the organisation.

At the start of the social action, as a group we sat down and 3 people of the 5 (at the time) contributed to the discussion of ideas. I created a checklist for the group and jobs were allocated to each member. 4 out of the 6 dot points in the checklist were actually completed. I specifically had the job of asking the library for permission to hold the donation bin, after this failed I then asked student services at Seaford Secondary College with one other student. I allocated jobs for the group report, a paragraph for each person. I

One of those was that the library was unable to be the drop off point for the bin, so I had to solve it by asking student services at Seaford Secondary College. Another issue that I came across while working in this group is that the group did not work that well together or separately, even after being allocated jobs. Due to this I ended up writing the group evaluation myself, collecting the evidence and notes to back up our social action. I felt like I was also acting very bossy as I was the one allocated tasks for the other members to do, such as when the group report was being written, the members left it all to the day before the submission date for some to even start and send in their paragraphs. I felt like I was also the leader of the group as I was always sending out emails and asking the members to ensure that they were doing the tasks that they had to do to successfully get complete and contribute to the social

Through this group assignment, I really learned much. First, I realize that I should learn more about finance and accounting .when talking about the last part in presentation during discussion, I cannot participate in the debate, and even do not know what they said when comes some proper nouns. Although my major is logistics, it is good for me to learn more about other subject knowledge such as finance and management. Second is although we had discussion many times, we were inefficient and wasted much time. We supposed to have a target or task for each discussion, and leader need to coordinate the meeting. In addition, democracy does not work every time in small group, everyone has a different idea and wants to persuade others, which is the reason that a good leader is very important for a team, so that I should start to train leadership skills. Third is that unity and cooperation are essential to a good team. Team members need to work for…

In my many years in working for the state of Georgia, I have worked in several groups, but the one that stands out the planning committee that I was serving on with my co-worker. We were trying to organize a non-profit organization called It takes a Village. We had a rough start but we worked to together and everyone understood the main goal and we all got assigned certain duties and once we complete the assigned task we, always assisted the other team members so that we get the job done.…

Natasha did do this, but I think some members of the group lacked a little urgency when doing their work. Natasha, Adam and I worked very hard in trying to put together a detailed and satisfactory presentation for our product, having to do some other peoples work to make sure it was done. Michael, worked well but didn’t really turn up in class which made it difficult for us to know what exactly work he had done. Becky and Joe didn’t really make much contribution to the group, Becky put together some of the advertising and did a sufficient amount, but Joe did nothing to contribute to the presentation. Overall, the main outcome of how the team thought I contributed was good. They said that I worked well to bring together everyone’s information to create the business plan and that I helped them with anything they were struggling with. Myself, I thought that I could have worked a little harder on the business plan and make sure that it was in complete detail, but it was hard when I didn’t quite know what everyone had…

A particular activity that stood out to me the most was the burrito project. Living pretty close to downtown LA I frequent visits there. I’ve witnessed homeless people asking for help and it hurt knowing that I could not do anything to help at the time. Until one day I came across the Burrito Project. I brought upon an idea to the club that we should help out the homeless. During the wintertime we all met at a church in Pasadena to prep the materials. At the church we make the burritos, it was considered the main meal for them. After making the burritos…

I have collaborated with my fellow students in the National Honors Society to make a true difference in our community. We have come together many times as a group to form fundraisers and support charity events. It would not have had the same effect if I was the only one participating. Each member had a special purpose in making each event meaningful. The largest accomplishment I have witnessed while in the NHS was the food drive we did for a local food bank. We got the entire school involved and had students bringing in many varieties of food every day. We collected hundreds of cans of food and filled the back of a delivery truck entirely. We came together as an association and gave food to those less fortunate than ourselves. It was an astonishing…

When it comes to roles, each person has a role in the group. If a person is not following through or does not feel comfortable in their role as a leader or doing a certain part in contributing, this can cause problems within the group. Every time there is a new group with different goals and people, there are different needs within the group. If it is in a work setting compared to a school setting, there are different needs that could be addressed.…

    Effective Groups

Effective work groups are essential to the survival of any business. As I thought about the groups I belong to I tried to find reason one that was effective that I did not oversee. Unfortunately, the only effective group that this applied to was a group I once belonged to at my previous company. This was the internet marketing group at a Timeshare company. Before I am able to talk about my group specifically I feel it is important to define what it is that makes a group a group. A group is “Two or more individuals in face-to-face interaction, each aware of the others who belong to the group, and each aware of positive interdependence as they strive to achieve mutual goals” (Johnson & Johnson, 2006). A group needs to integrate the multiple realities that individuals bring to it. Many believe that people who think alike or have similar personalities make up an effective group, when in reality they do not. This group was made up of three individuals, my subordinate Karen, my Director Jodi and myself. Together the three of us were responsible for developing a marketing plan and executing it to bring in six million dollars a year. This was a very important task to generate six million dollars a year in a department that was just started. Our work group was extremely effective for a variety of reasons. We knew how to communicate with each other, we had clearly defined individual roles, and we had great leadership.…

We started our group session with a short icebreaker as a way for each member to introduce him/herself. We were seated with our seats facing each other in a circle. Initially, some members seemed a bit hesitant to share since we weren’t yet familiar with each other. Their hesitation was obvious in the body language they displayed (arms crossed over their chest, leaning back in chair, etc) and the slow development of discussion at first. The icebreaker seemed effective as each member got to share their name and an embarrassing time in their life. By an informal vote and a democratic method, I was appointed as the group facilitator. The other group members indicated that it seemed that I had some displayed some task specialist skills that they thought might be beneficial to our group. I took on the role somewhat reluctantly.…

I took on the informal roles of a compromiser, gatekeeper and encourager during the group interactions (Connery & Vohs, 2006). In the compromise role, I offered suggestions and encouraged feedback from the group members on my ideas so that we could all have a chance to weigh in on decisions that were being made and come to a collective agreement on how we wanted to proceed. As the gatekeeper, I kept up frequent communication online with my group members when we did not meet in person in an attempt to help facilitate dialogue and keep group members up to date. I felt that I helped initiate our first few weeks of coordination and assigning roles through these updates and dialogue. During in-person interactions I tried…

Many people engage in community service project because they are either forced as a punishment or sentence. Others engage in community service out of Spirit of unselfishness, or a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For me, it brings a sense of completeness. During the past few semester my team members and I have engage in different projects, Collecting food, clothes and donating to the homeless. In a way I’ve experience working the different organizations and helping the community. But with this particular project, it meant much more then collecting for the disadvantaged, It was about lending a hand and your heart to a community in need.. During my involvement in this fieldwork project I got the opportunity to offer my unconditional assistance for one day in a non-profit making community based project. The name of the project was Liberty City Construction, which is being undertaken by a Christian ministry organization whose aim is to improve the livelihood of low-income families through building affordable and decent houses at a 0% interest rate. The organization founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda fuller has built and rehabilitated more then 100,000 families in need, becoming the world leader in addressing the issues if poverty housing. They work in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all social, economic, and ethic group to expand communities with people in need by building an renovating houses so that everyone can experience God’s love and can live and grow in to all the God intends. For that particular day, three of my group members and I…

Not knowing each other prior to the group assignment, it is similar to entering a new working environment, having to work with people whose working style we are not used to. Therefore, my group is reserved in voicing our opinions during the generation of the report. Each member has their own approach in writing a report, which might be unacceptable to others. This resulted in the rejection of one member’s write-up without any explanation by another member, who was compiling the report, until being confronted on the issue.…
