Many people of all ages have different views on education. In the following essay I will compare two authors’ ideas on the educational system in America. I will share my thoughts from the essays titled “Against School” by John Gatto and “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose and how they relate to my experiences and schools today.…
Marxists take a critical view of the role of education. Capitalist society is essentially a two-class system, with a ruling class exploiting the working class. Marxist see education as being run in the interests if the ruling class. For example, Althusser argues that education is an important ideological state apparatus that helps to control people’s ideas and beliefs. He suggests education has to purposes. It reproduces class inequalities through the generations by ensuring that most working-class pupils experience education failure. Education also legitimates this inequality, persuading the working class to accept educational and social inequalities. Other Marxists have also pointed to the existence of a hidden curriculum in schools.…
A yougn woman by the name of Clarisse McClellan describes school as being.’’An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions, or at least most don't; they just run the answers at you, bing, bing, bing, and us sitting there for four more hours of film-teacher.’’ Books don’t exsist in this societie they arent importent, people can’t read or writte wich is the bass of all knowledge. In are society if you can not read you can not work, you can not be independent in are society and survive with out being able to…
Throughout History, people have studied about the Defense of human rights, and how they tied to the book Night. There are many excerptions from Night that violates the Articles of the Constitution. There are many explanations of why it happened. Many false accusations of articles were displayed throughout the story. Jews were dehumanized in this story and it proves it and shows how. Everyone in this book suffered some kind of pain or either suffered or died.…
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (Nelson Mandela) This stimulating quote, by Nelson Mandela, shows the power education has on one. However, in my book, “Anthem”, this is not the case. In this dystopian world the citizens are punished for their inquisitiveness. “Anthem” is about a society in which every action that you make is controlled or monitored by the government. The government assigned you your job, the government tells you who to mate with, and the government controls the amount of education you receive. I think by know it would be easier to say what the government does not control but I don’t even think you have control over something. This lifestyle deplorable and the reason nobody is restenting…
Throughout high school and previous situations I have engaged in all of the modes of W.O.V.E. I personally believe that I rely on the subject to perform well while communicate. One such instance of comparison was in high school English our class was required to write an eight to twelve minute oral report over the book Night by Elie Wiesel. I struggled to reach the minimum requirements of the assignment. I simply couldn’t motivate myself as it wasn’t exciting.…
Attempting to persuade his audience reading from this Article,John Taylor Gatto’s displays his points of view that he does not belive in our school system. He believes that the staying in the American schooling system for so long has supplied him with every reason to refer to it as a childish program. According to him, people may see the key problem of schooling as boredom. To clarify his point, Gatto asserts having education is not equal to taking schooling which is instead considered as “a daily routine in a factory of childishness in order to make sure children do not really grow up.” Gatto supports his views by enumerating a significant number of successful Americans who did not go through the schooling system but turned out to be productive, such as Abraham Lincoln. In this short story, “Against School”, Gatto tells his experiences with students that complained they were bored in school. Gatto said these students were not interested in what was being taught because they often said the work was stupid and that they already knew it. According to Gatto, these students were interested only in grades rather than learning the subject.…
Why is education important to society? Would one be able to read without a successful teacher teaching one how to read? Education is a key that holds the ability to open many doors - doors which open into vast rooms of knowledge, love, experience, discovery, and dreams. Education is an essential to human living and a fulfilling life, but what happens when the path one takes is not the choice that one personally wants? In “University”, written by Leona Gom, and “Warren Pryor”, written by Alden Nowlan, the poems present both negative and positive effects of education on society.…
I shall also look at current legislation and recent reports regarding education including: The Cambridge Primary Review (2009) and The Rose Review (2009) to examine how the government look to support and develop learning. I will look to debate the ideas of three major theorists - Jean Piaget (1932), Lev Vygotsky (1978) and Abraham Maslow (1943), to describe the practice that I have observed in School A.…
School has been around for many years now. Countless of people every year attend this place in order to gain knowledge and grow as a person. The education an institution provides can vary from literature, philosophy, language, and so on. Willona M. Sloan has done research upon the purpose of education and found that it has to do with “[supporting] children's ability to become lifelong learners who are able to love, work, and act as responsible members of the community” (pg 9). Although education serves a role in a person’s life, is the material provided to educate these students sufficient though? Gerald Graff argues in his article, Hidden Intellectualism, that if school systems would incorporate more youth culture into the lessons,…
Elie Wiesel, a strong survivor of the Holocaust, went face to face with the worst of God’s tests. His novel, Night, was published to remind future generations of this heart-breaking event, in order to prevent a catastrophe such as this one from happening again. Throughout his novel, Wiesel shares the moments that he found to be most life changing. He starts his journey with a strong belief in God and then from the challenges he faces he becomes confused in what to believe. Elie Wiesel’s experiences during the Holocaust gradually alter his faith in God; this is a result of the deaths he witnesses, the lack of mercy from the guards, and his separation from friends and family.…
Educational programs demand effort and dedication to be successful. Barber expresses his concern for the lack of literacy in America. In Barbers essay, he states, “As America’s educational system crumbles, the pundits, instead of looking for solutions, search busily for scapegoats” (Barber, 2014, pp.210). America’s government takes minimal actions toward the educational crisis. The situation resembles a hole in the wall that needs fixed, but instead of fixing it America’s society hangs a picture over the hole. The lack of educational reforms causes the America’s youth to fall behind other countries youth in literacy. The lack of effort from the government, from schools, parents, teachers, and students put a strain on learning. Some American citizens proclaim that they want a change in the school systems, but nothing results from it. Barber states, “With all the goodwill in the world, it is still hard to know how schools can cure the ills that stem from the failure of so many other institutions. Saying we want education to come first won’t put it first” (Barber, 2014, pp.217). Society labels schools as “prisons,” and sadly, some are less safe than actual prisons. The lack of safety forces students to focus on their own safety rather than learning. Not all schools provide safe environments for students; The result of this problem is conflicts and disinterest for learning. The lack of effort put forth by America’s society and government is only one factor in this multitude of…
Most Youths have a different perspective than adults do about schooling. Most adults view schooling as an opportunity to become what you want in the career world. Visa-versa, the view students share towards schooling is that schooling is boring and a waste of time; some may even call it imprisonment. Adults tend to blame students for student’s lack of interest which discourages students and make schooling more boring and feel like more of a waste of time for themselves. The fact that adults have different views than students do on education shows us that we are teaching our kids that education isn’t important. Therefore, we need to address this issue by teaching our kids to value education.…
“Against School” is an argumentative essay that tells about how the public education system incapacitates the children of today. It was written by John Taylor Gatto. In this reading, Gatto claims that the public education system causes children to become bored with themselves, to conform to the way of the school and its teachers, and it causes them to lack the ability to deal with issues that go on in the real world, outside of school. Gatto’s explanation for this is that it is partially the teachers’ fault. The students become bored because the teacher is actually bored with teaching the subject. Students would be adamant to learn if they were given and education and not a “schooling”. They need to be encouraged to have the qualities to succeed in life instead of sitting in a prison style confinement, forced to learn material that society deemed appropriate. Summing up his essay, Gatto states that he believes that the students should be able to manage themselves.…
School and education is – what they say – the most important thing for society. That education is the way to get a good life. That as long as you have a great education and a great average mark you’ll do well, and that education will keep you out of trouble, unemployment and poverty. But for children all of this is hard to understand – even for high school-kids. But that is a problem as it is them who are in the education system. Barack Obama therefore holds this speech to inform the kids and youngsters of the importance of a good education.…
