During Wind and Rain Thomas Hardy Full analysis
In the poem During Wind and Rain, Hardy uses up to 5 themes ,4 major ones and a minor one in it to portray the imagery and situation of what the poet himself is trying to set forward. The first theme of Time shows how Hardy is very aware that time moves on. Nothing lasts for-ever. All joys are temporary. Human happiness is only temporary. Each stanza ends with an image of the years passing. He seems to regret the changes that time has brought to the happy family scenes. In all case Hardy introduces the subject of the years passing with ‘Ah, no’. Hardy thinks the happy family are unaware that time will end their happiness together. In the third stanza he comments on how ‘blithe’ or unaware they are of the tragedy of decay and death in time. Hardy portrays time as the enemy of happiness. Time may also destroy the memorial to the family as it ‘ploughs’ through their carved name.
Second theme of Family Life on the other hand shows how Hardy portrays family in various activities. They entertain each other with songs, they work together in the garden, they enjoy a breakfast together in the garden and they move house together. A spirit of co-operation and happiness is very obvious. All the images of the family emphasise their togetherness. The poem shows the family growing up from juniors to men and maidens. The family seem innocent and good natured. They all seem unaware that time is a threat that hangs over their happy activities. The last stanza shows that they have been successful and have gained in prosperity as they prepare to move to a new house. On another level this house may mean heaven; that their final destiny as a family is to die. The last line shows that they have all died.
Third major theme of the poem would be death, he explains how No matter how happy life can be, death awaits all. Hardy ends each stanza with a reminder of death. The most striking image of death is the word ‘carved’ in the final stanza. Hardy even suggests that in time the weather

Thomas maintains a strong emphasis on life and death throughout the poem. He draws a strong correlation between the two in the very beginning of the poem by likening them to explosives. The stem of a blooming, blossoming flower is the fuse, gradually getting smaller and smaller, until the spark reaches the bottom and ignites the explosive, ‘blasting the roots of trees,’ killing us off when we mature and come of age. Again this connection is strengthened when he claims the very stuff we are made of, ‘clay,’ is also used to make the ‘hangman’s lime,’ the material hangmen and undertakers use to cover bodies when they decay. By repeating this concept over and over in each stanza Thomas sets the foundation for his poem and moulds everything else around it, making the poem’s objective clear and firmly planting what he wants to convey to the reader in their memory.…

In Thanatopsis, the author shows the theme about death by comparing it to nature’s beauty. Most people see death as horrible, but Bryant shows an in-depth meaning to it. The poem starts off by personifying nature as a beautiful female, “…and a smile and eloquence of beauty” (Lines 4-5), who will always be there for you to make you feel better, “Into his darker musings, with a mild and healing sympathy.”(Lines 6-8) The poem takes a shift and talks about how death feels like “Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall and breathless darkness, and the narrow house,” (Lines 11-12) and the idea of being in pain in a dark coffin. The poem continues going back and forth on nature’s beauty and death, and soon connects it back to the theme. “Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again, (Line 23)” shows that after death is another phase of life itself, and we will return to be one with nature. Our dead decomposing bodies will be mixed in with nature, “Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mould. (Line 30)” Bryant compares nature to a coffin, “Are but the solemn decorations all of the great tomb of man.” (Line 44-45), to show the coffins of dead people created nature’s beauty, the valleys, hills, rivers. Bryant leaves a…

One of the greatest authors in history, Edgar Allen Poe, for some reason always creates writing pieces revolving around death. Why does he do that? One reason for this is probably because his life had many sorrows and difficulties. It was filled with deaths of close family members and many friendships. In his poems and other pieces of work he uses many literary devices to convey this. Edgar Allen Poe uses rhyme, repetition, and symbolism to show his different emotions and produce poems with themes of sorrow and regret.…

By comparing joyful tones to death is difficult to understand, by comparing them to things that have similar meanings which makes it more understandable. “Take note of thy departure? All that breathe will share thy destiny”. By comparing him dying and using a comparison to the other it also shows his meaning of the work. That no matter what, no matter what breath you take, you will end up in the same boat. Once again comparing and showing the meaning of the work throughout each quote in the poem. This quote most importantly proves his meaning, by comparing the people who don't understand death as a timeless thing and as something that shouldn't be spoken of until it happens. This interrupts the meaning of how death is a concept that is terrifying. “The speechless babe, and the gray-headed man man- -Shall one by one be gathered to thy side, By those, who in their turn, shall follow them”. Once again continuing the process of which the author continues to use and compare the people who never thought about death in this way, to believe him and what he preaches. As spoken in the quote before this has a more unique meaning to what he compares death too. Going strait to the point in which people all are going to end up in the same…

In the fourth stanza he tells us that some people don’t learn about life soon enough when he says “And learn, too late, they grieved on its way, /Go not go gentle into that good night.” When he says “grieved” or “go gentle” it gives a rebellious outlook about death. Towards the end of the poem the author gives an example that even his father will have to battle death. In the last two lines of the stanza the author uses a couplet when he says, “Do not go gentle into that good night, /Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” The last words say that people should fight death and carry on living.…

There are certain concepts within life that the human mind has trouble understanding. It is these concepts that often appear in famous literature. American writers often struggled to gain popularity when competing with Europe and the first notable group to break the chain was the Fireside Poets. This group was made up of four famous poets and their most famous poems have a common theme: death. The poems in question are Longfellow's “ A Psalm of Life” and “ The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” and Lowell’s “ The First Snowfall”. Each is about death and the different ways of viewing a common occurrence in nature.…

The poet’s point of view is disturbing to the reader through seeing the themes involved in the poem. The main theme of time is seen throughout the poem and the three stanzas follow through time and show aspects of their life in the past, present and future. We see the present participle in stanza one through the phrase, “Summer is fading” which shows the high point in their year is disappearing. The past participle appears in the second stanza through words in the word set of time such as “Behind” and “Before” which shows the poet is looking back on the high points in his life. Because of this structure, you get the feeling that their life is dying with time and is dragging on and on against their will. And finally the third stanza is set in the future showing that the love will continue to die with time and with more children we have no free time. This leads us onto another theme of replacement which we see in the first and third Stanzas through phrases of “new recreation” meaning children and “Finding more unripe acorns.” Another theme in the poem is the theme of regimentation which appears in all three stanzas. “One’s and two’s” and “Assemble” both fit into this theme as both are aspects of force and…
