Dual Enrollment
I fully understand that my extracurricular activities appear to be at the absolute minimal. However, I would like to contend that this is the direct result of participating in dual enrollment while in high school. Through the High School Enrichment Program offered by State Center Community College District (SCCCD), I am endowed with the privilege to not only enroll in college courses, but also receive college credit at the same time. This is a highly rigorous program that only a limited number of students who have approval from their high school principal, guidance counselor, and parents are eligible.
Similar to applying to colleges, submitting the application did neither guarantee acceptance into SCCCD nor guarantee a seat in the class(es)

Admittedly, I could have chosen some other classes to take later in the evenings instead of right after lunch; yet, I specifically wanted to take the two physics courses I'm currently enrolled in right now to not only gain knowledge and learn new material, but also seize the opportunity to solidify my understanding of concepts exposed to in high school.
Taking any of the previously aforementioned AP courses during 3rd period would not have worked out for me either. This year's AP Chemistry class is being taught 3rd and 7th period. Disregarding 7th period, I signed up as a Tutor/Teacher's Assistant in 3rd period AP Chemistry. It is not that I value my English or economics education less, but that I value others' chemistry education more.
Having taken a full year of general (inorganic) chemistry at both the high school and college level, I have noticed a striking disparity about labs. Compared to college chemistry of the same curriculum, high school AP Chemistry lacks an appropriate laboratory equipped with adequate equipment and high tech apparatus. In addition, there exists major time constraints due class meetings lasting a maximum of two

I was born in raised in Starke, FL. As I grew up in a declining education system, my mother began teaching me throughout my pre-k to 9th grade life. The education system in Bradford was not challenging enough for me, I easily made straight A’s throughout those years effortlessly. I began to realize I am easily making perfect grades without lifting a single finger, I wanted to be challenged. I moved schools from Bradford County to P.K. Yonge in Gainesville. It is a long commute, but it is worth my education.…

course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, in their first year, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register in courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses. AP Chemistry should meet the objectives of a good college general chemistry course. Students in such a course should attain a depth of understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course should contribute to the development of the students’ abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic.…

When it comes to choosing classes for a semester I always try to choose an enjoyable class. One where I know I will not have to stress over tests and homework. Last semester was weight training. This semester as I was browsing I stumbled upon a class titled Geology 270. This class caught my attention right away. I looked at the course description and read it. The thing that stood out the most was that in this class we would study the geology of the eastern Sierra Nevada in one of the most unique ways one could think of, a 3 day field trip. I have never been camping and I thought this would be the best way to do it for the first time. I figured since I would go with teachers and other students it would be both fun and educational. I was not wrong. So, I signed up for the class and signed up my sister for it too. The day of the field trip came quickly.…

The public education system in the United States puts a greater emphasis on test scores and grades that it does actual learning. While around 80 percent of high school students graduate, most of them are not being prepared for what comes next. I have come to believe that there is more to education that a decent GPA, so I have tried to enrich myself with as much real-world experience as possible during my time in high school, while still trying to maintain my grades. My time in leadership positions, desire to work with other intellectual individuals, and rigorous academic goals all make me an exceptional candidate for the Honors College at East Carolina University.…

Frankly speaking, I believe this is a great introduction into college, so when we do enter college, we will be fully prepared for the course ahead of us. I also believe that a dual credit class will help me learn the skills I need in order to survive college. Along this path I will also gain all the responsibilities needed for college. Unlike high school, college is harder and requires more skills and responsibilities; however, dual credit classes will be the stepping stone between high school and college that will help me acquire the skills and responsibilities as…

I started taking classes part-time at OSU my junior year of high school, and full-time my senior year. By the time I graduated high school, I took 40 credit hours of classes at OSU and had a 3.81 OSU GPA. Despite the tough coursework I found time to partake in numerous extracurricular activities. When I officially joined OSU as a freshman, I joined the small biomedical science major and biological sciences group. In these groups, I have not only helped my peers with their academics, but I have given them guidance on how to simultaneously manage both their academics and fitness pursuits.…

I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. Although it was hard with my many extracurricular activities I somehow still managed to finish my junior year with a 3.8…

I have become fond of the liberal arts education The College of Charleston offers, which emphasizes exploration into all areas of academia. An example of this would be the honors history courses that interest me, as I enjoy learning beyond my focus of science, and into other areas that create an appreciation for society’s diversity. One of the many aspects of the Honors College I find engaging are the academic opportunities unique to the Honors College that allow students to develop in their major interests, but also diversify their knowledge in all areas, as the academic requirements extend from calculus to western civilization. The opportunities the Honors College extends to its students are what make it appealing to me, and my experience so far in college has led me to believe that I am the right fit for the Honors College, as it would help me develop as a person, and help me achieve my…

    AP Classes In High School

During course registrations at my middle school, I was advised to take AP classes in high school. AP classes were rigorous classes that challenged you and taught you things at a college-level, unlike the ordinary High School Curriculum. Originally, I denied myself. An obstacle I had at that time was not taking the next step because of the fear I had of college classes. It wasn’t that my family was financially unable. My family was able to pay for the AP…

Honors Chemistry was always a pleasantly productive period. A typical class block entailed only a lesson and worksheet; for example, I would speed through a stoichiometry worksheet, ensure that I understood limiting reagents, and find myself with half of the period to occupy. Some days I would finish homework for other classes, while other days I would browse scientific journals on my phone. Occasionally I would use this time to “do math,” which, for someone without much of a background in the subject, meant toying with a calculator and graph paper until the bell rang.…

When my parents first expressed to me that I needed to take advanced courses starting freshman year, I was skeptical. I desired an easy, laid-back experience in high school; however, my parents declared otherwise. I began freshman year with three honors classes, and the parental expectation to make at least ninety-five percent in all of my classes. At the time, I thought this to be too extreme, but little did I know that colleges look back on all grades…

    My Working Experience

I am eager to improve myself, which is why I took 23 credits worth of courses in one semester, while simultaneously working part time up to 20 hours a week. I performed well, which is why I pushed myself even further. I took calculus II over the summer, while working longer hours. It did not work out well for me academically, and serves as my one poor recent grade. Although I struggled with the course over the summer, I don’t regret taking the course because it taught me a lot about how I learn information. Our minds are like sponges, and when I was taking 23 credits during the semester I was able to absorb the steady stream of knowledge from various different sources, despite the high volume. However, during the month long summer sequence I was being hit with a fire hose of information. Instead of absorbing the information, I was blasted back. After the fire hose turned off for the day, I was only able to absorb the remaining puddle of information around me, during the limited amount of time I was not working. I learned the lesson that I should have familiarized myself with the content covered in the class before taking it during the summer. I am currently taking calculus II during the Fall semester, and my familiarity with the material has led to me currently have a grade above 100 after the first exam. In the future I will familiarize myself with the information covered…
