In the story “Circus in town” and “‘Happyness’ for sale”, both the protagonist face difficult situations. However, in the end, they both solve the problem successfully. Optimism plays an significant role in both of their process of solving their problem. Optimism provides energy for the two characters; it gives them power to address the difficulties. 1.In “‘Happyness’ for sale”, Chris Gardner had the world on his shoulders during his study at Dean Witter’s training program. Optimism gave him power to hold on and keep on studying hard. 2.“Hope is sometimes all another person needs,” says Gardner. 3.The same situation happens to Jenny in the story “Circus in town”. Jenny did not despair, even though she could not go to see the circus. Optimism helps her to overcome the sadness and helps her keep on arguing with her mom and dad. For both Jenny and Chris, the positive attitude that gives them strength is important. Optimism also makes the two characters find alternative solutions. 4. In the story “Circus in town”, Jenny knows that she cannot go to see the circus no matter what; however, she takes the poster of the circus and sees the imaginary circus in her head. It is impossible for Jenny to come up with that idea without the help of optimism. 5. In Chris Gardner’s early life, when he was still struggling to become a stockbroker, Chris lived in a cheap hotel. However, he could not afford them as his learning period became longer and longer. With the help of positive thinking, Chris found an alternative solution. He slept in the bathroom of a subway station, and sometimes in church.
