This era in history is characterized by continuing advances in technology and breakthroughs in all fields of science. The field of medical science is no exception, with new medicines, medical procedures and technologies being introduced to the benefit of humanity. Medical practitioners need to keep their knowledge updated after their formal education at medical school. Governments in different parts of the world set criteria and incentives for medical practitioners to attend continuing formal programmes of medical education 1. Peck et al. reviewed the continuing medical education in the Western hemisphere, mainly in the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. However, little research exists investigating continuing medical education (CME) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Prior studies have provided an overview of CME in other Middle Eastern countries, such as…

Upon reading the article “The Hot Spotters”, written by Atul Gwande it became apparent how our healthcare system has and continues to fail our patients in various ways. To begin with, our healthcare system is very fragmented due to the lack of collaboration, communication and coordination between care providers as well as health care facilities. Also, our healthcare system is more focused on the medical model and in some situations, neglects the importance of primary and preventative care. Lastly, the cost of healthcare is a topic that has been discussed endlessly. However, the fact is that the cost of medical care, drugs and devices is only escalating and is often left…

While Western doctors force patients to come to the hospital, regardless of the patient's’ conditions, and spend only twenty minutes at the bedsides, the traditional Hmong doctors spend eight hours at a patient’s home. Moreover, the Western doctors are sometimes unable to point out the cause of the problem despite asking many rude and intimate questions about patients. On the other hand, the Hmong doctors can render an immediate diagnosis, although they do not ask many questions to patients.…

Government restrictions on qualifying foreign doctors, medical school requirements, and MD student programs have become a rising issue. Canadian government lacks to establish programs to integrate foreign doctors into our health care system. Foreign trained doctors ranging from India, Italy, Pakistan, China, France, and Germany are denied a physician license in Canada. The government fails to neither assess nor organize training programs for these physicians; able to assist in health care shortages across the country (Esmail, 2011). Government restrictions have denied residency and ‘license to practice’ of international trained physicians for lengthy periods up to 10+ years (National Film Board of Canada, 2012). Unfortunately this group of physicians are forced to work minimum wage and degraded jobs, although acquiring all requirements and degrees to perform in Canada. The government of Canada has raised not only tuition/student fees but requirements of MD school in Canada. Issues arise when instead, international MD schools accept admission of Canadian medical students; doctors whom should practice/aid in our country are forced outwards. Canadian students whom have…

There has been a growing concern that health sector needs a huge attention today, not only from government, citizen, but also from many discipline of health care practices. In the recent year, in the United States which is a superpower country, the delivery of human services is still to be a constant puzzle for policy makers, practitioners, and academics (Mayhew, 2012). Health care delivery (including preventive and supportive care) in this country is challenged by demands of access, safety, quality, and cost (Giberson, et. al., 2011). Even though, many years before, these health care issues has been arised as Wilson D.E. stated that the year 1994 was one of great health care non-reform, although national legislation was enacted, states began to seek ways to deal seriously with the issues, primarily the cost, but also the quality of care (Institute of Medicine 25th Anniversary Symposium, 1996). The same thing is happened in the developing country, even worse. Such as in Indonesia, despite solid economic growth in recent years that has raised millions from poverty, Indonesia faces numerous healthcare challenges, from maternal mortality to vector-borne diseases such as malaria to malnutrition, and degenerative diseases associated with a population that is both ageing and living an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. (The Economist Intelligence Unit, 2010). Besides that, most of population in this country lives in rural areas making the delivery of health care services difficult, a system of community health centres is being developed in response to the needs of the rural community (Jacobalis S., 1989). This means that health care matter is still unresolved.…

There are many differences between the healthcare systems in the United Arab Emirates and Canada. While both countries provide comprehensive healthcare for its citizens, the characteristics of the said countries differ greatly mainly due to its population dynamics. In addition, in terms of development, the UAE has not reached the state that the Canadian health care sector is currently in. Keeping the population size in mind, it is no surprise that Canada’s expenditure is much larger than the United Arab Emirates. Even though both countries are in different stages of development, one could forecast that when the UAE’s development is at par with Canada, its expenditure will be used in a significantly more efficient manner. In order to analyze this, the expenditure per capita, number of hospitals and number of certified doctors will be evaluated from an economic perspective.…

Background: Over the past month, I was given the assignment of completing an in-depth report comprising of 20 questions pertaining to the various aspects of a clinic. These questions covered a wide range of medical as well as administrational topics, ranging from the organizational structure of the clinic to the diseases that it treated and the lab tests that it carried out. The extensive research that I have done over the past month has greatly improved my knowledge not only of the clinic but also of the medical profession as a whole. Visiting various departments of the clinic and meeting with a few of the physicians, although very briefly, has only intensified my love of the medical profession and for this, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Mohamed Bessou the Regional Director of Medical Centers – Abu Dhabi and Ms. Paula Marie Manoop for taking time out of their busy schedules to provide me with this wonderful opportunity.…
