Generic Name: Lithium
Overview: The purpose of this teaching plan is to provide the client with information about how to safely take a newly ordered drug Lithium.
Objectives:
After completion of this teaching plan the patient will be able to: 1. List the generic and trade names of this prescribed medication. 2. Identify the dose ordered by the physician. 3. Describe when to take the ordered medicine. 4. Discuss the therapeutic purpose for taking this drug. 5. List the major adverse effects of this drug. 6. List any drugs and herbal remedies that should be avoided when taking this drug.
Implementation:
1. Generic Name: Lithium
Trade Names- Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithotabs 2. Ordered Dose for this patient: 600mg three times a day oral. 3. Take with meals to keep from being nauseated. 4. The therapeutic usage of Lithium is to help with maniac episodes in bipolar disorder as well as prevention for such episodes. 5. Adverse effects: mild tremor of hands, weakness, lack of coordination, mild nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, thinning or drying of hair, itching skin.
Call your doctor for these symptoms: extreme thirst, urinating more or less than usual, weakness, fever, feeling confused, eye pain, vision problems, restless muscle movements in eye, jaw, or neck, halluciantions, seizures, black out periods, muscle stiffness, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeat. 6. Medications and/or herbs to avoid with drug. * acetazolamide (Diamox) * aminophylline (Truphylline) or theophylline (Elixophyllin, Respbid, Theo-Bid, Theo-Dur, Uniphyl); * sodium bicarbonate (Alka-Seltzer, Bicitra, Polycitra, or baking soda home remedy antacid); * carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol); * fluoxetine (Prozac); * metronidazole (Flagyl); * potassium iodide thyroid medication (Pima); * an ACE inhibitor such as
