Drug Diaries
These diary entires are Katy Brenner's documentation of her experience in the drug scene during the 60's in the early stages of the Hippie movement.
Diary entry #1 Febuary 3rd 1961
Dear Diary, due to the huge new "Hippie" movement going on here in portland and apprently around the U.S, drugs seem to have become very popular latley. This sparks my interest as everyday while at school my friends seem to talk about diffrent things they have tried and experienced and it's starting to make me a little jelous honestly.
My friend Colin mentioned that he is getting some Marijuana sometime tomorrow from his friend and i think i'm going to join him and some other people to try it, i'm a little nervous about it but i can only hope it will be as much of a blast as the others say it is.
Diary entry #2 Febuary 4th 1961
Dear Diary, so the marijuana was a huge let down after all, i'm writing this just hoping i don't be sick anymore. At first it was pretty amazing, i took a few drags from the "joint" as they called it and after around 30 seconds or so i started to become very light headed and a kind of wheightless feeling washed over me which made me rock back and fourth while staring into space, if i was to ever try to reach peace, i would say that will be the closest i ever get.
However, after having a little more the wheightless feeling starting overwhelming me and it started feeling as if i was on a boat that was shifting on very heavy waves which made me feel extremlly sick. I couldn't keep my balance and i ended up just falling over and lying there for a good 20 minutes before getting up and immediatly vomiting in the nearest bush. I have felt the same for most of the day except i have more body control now and i have somewhere to lie down which isn't the street.
I guess this drug is okay in small quantities but it's nothing amazing really other than for a quick buzz and relaxing. nothing special to me and i probably won't be having more but i'll try to keep an

Drug abuse, of course, is not new to any culture. Drugs have been a part of American culture, their popularity increased in the 1950s, when writers and social figures started popularizing them. In the 1960s, drug use took on a whole new meaning. It became a way of rebelling, particularly among college students who were disenchanted with America's values and the war in Vietnam, which they viewed as a senseless conflict. The popularity that drugs achieved in these days two decades paved the way for their dangerous and widespread use in the 1980s. The 1980s saw the drug industry grow bigger and more deadly - both for users and for dealers. Now, it is important to understand what the drug is and how it works. It originated in China around 2736 B.C. and was used as a psychoactive agent (History of Marijuana). It was brought over to North America by the English in the 16th century and became a major cash crop in the 19th century. The United States never really had a problem with it until the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 was passed. Strict laws were placed on the possession and trafficking of the drug. It is a mixture of dried, shredded flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the Cannabis sativa plant. Weed consists of over 400 different chemicals, but the main active ingredient is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC (Properties of Cannabis). It is classified as a disrupter, which means it changes your thought process and emotions. The way it gets a person “high” is also a good thing to understand. When a person smokes it, it enters the body and goes to the lungs. From there, it moves into the blood stream and shortly into the heart. The heart pumps the THC up to the brain where it alters the physical and chemical balance, therefore resulting in a feeling and mindset know as a “high”.…
