Abstract
This paper focuses on Drexler’s Bar-B-Que, a family run business that has existed for over 60 years. The paper addresses how values play a role in the success of the business but also delves into how a family business’s values impact operations and success. The effectiveness of the organization is reviewed and discussed related to how a family run business can achieve success but yet not be effective. To drive this point the paper will have research topics from Internet based resources in business related to how family businesses succeed and what the pitfalls are. The paper will also address how Drexler’s business fits into the systems model illustrated in Organizational Behavior and Management, ninth edition. The use of Internet resources and text book elements will provide a picture of both the effectiveness and survivability of a company based on the environment it exists in.

Drexler’s World Famous Bar-B-Que Case Study

Drexler’s Bar-B-Que is a classic example of a family run business. Employees are the life blood of any organization. How well the employees function, work as a team and how productive they are sets a company apart from their competitors. The opposite is also true, when a company has counterproductive employees those employees act as a cancer throughout the organization affecting performance, customer loyalty, and the bottom line. In the case of Drexler this company has been in the family for over 60 years. The company’s culture, community interaction, and customers have been honed over decades of consistent quality performance. Statistics show that 30% of family businesses survive to the second generation and 10% to the third (DiMatteo, 2008). This paper addresses the role values play in how Drexler’s Bar-B-Que interacts with its neighbors and customers. A family business like Drexler’s carries a value system that is born from within the family. It will carry through in how the

    With any business, it is important that employees have the ability to fulfill multiple roles so that the business can increase productivity, efficiency, and popularity.
