Drawing to Painting
Just as writing needs a rough draft, painting needs a drawing before expressing his or her ideas through the final product. Brainstorming is imagination, and drawing is putting it all down on something a little more concrete. Through drawing, an artist can see what roams around in his or her mind. It is a way for a painter to understand his or her inspiration as well as a painter’s first connection with the subject. By analyzing the sketching Raphael completed before the final oil painting of the Alba Madonna, the viewer can depict the theory of why he began this piece with a drawing. Our book does explain the step by step process of how the elements of Raphael’s drawings were used to form the final composition of the Alba Madonna.
Raphael utilized drawing before committing to any canvas because it helped him brainstorm or allow him to make his first draft of the piece. The materials Raphael needed for his drawings most likely consisted of black chalk, red chalk, metal point or charcoal. For Raphael’s paintings, the materials he needed mostly consisted of oil with pigments on wood, panel, or canvas for fresco paintings as well as Tempera on wood. For the Alba Madonna in particular, Raphael used oil paint on panel, which was then transferred to canvas. Raphael’s paintings were considered unique due to the large amount of paint he used. There are many difficulties when painting with oil in that era sheds some light on Raphael’s talent, and his amazing ability to create such detailed masterpieces with the unforgiving and ill-tempered form of medium (“Raphael Biography,” 2013).
When considering the differences between the first couple of drawings and the final composition while tracking how the first drawing eventually became Raphael’s Alba Madonna. (Sayre 2010) These drawings define the beginnings of the Alba Madonna. Through them, the viewer can determine Raphael’s thought process. In

The lines around her eyes and forehead, and her lips shows that she is upset. Mary appears like she knows the future crucifixion of her son. Also another reason why she is upset, would be the isolation and anger towards her because of having a baby in an illegitimate way, which is not true but most of the people didn't understand when she gave a birth to Christ . Mary's hands, one holding Jesus, one pointing him, are very thin and long. Jesus, unlike Mary, has a calm expression and his face looks very old and mature for his body's size. He is holding a scroll, probably it's a religious text from the Bible, which may refer to bringing the direct afflatus of the Holy Spirit.Performing "Madonna and Child", Berlinghiero was influenced by Byzantine icons, small portable paintings depicting holy figures usually Christ and the Virgin. This icon-like image exhibits many of the characteristics of Byzantine traits, for instance, the Virgin's long straight nose and small mouth, schematic linear folds of Christ's robe.When examining…

    Leonard da Vinci and Michelangelo looked at drawing as a part of a creative process due to the fact that this medium needs a more in- depth process that forces the artists to look deep into their imagination in order to form a direct connection and provide a personal perspective of their individual vision to those who viewed their work.     In this painting, you see around 60 Greek philosophers arranged in a very large hall. The philosophers are talking to each other, discussing theories or mathematical queries. It symbolizes philosophic thinking and the search for truth. On the wall you can see paintings and statues. He has used contour lines with domes and actual line with figures.     We know that the subject matter of both Cimabue’s Madonna and Child Enthroned and Giotto’s Madonna Enthroned depicts the Virgin mother holding her son Jesus Christ upon a golden throne with angels at either shoulder. After looking at Cimabue’s work, it is debatable whether his apprentice Giottos surpassed the man. In manners of skill, Giotto’s more classical and naturalist style took on other stylistic components that very well exhibited a 3-dimensional space upon a 2-dimensional plane.
