Dr Tackett History
In this video, Dr. Tackett talks about history. He does this by stating the differences in the past, the present, and the future. He goes on to say that historical revisionism is the same as a lie (Tackett et al, 2011). Individuals rewrite history to benefit themselves, which is the same reason that someone lies. Tackett compares the number of manuscripts that various famous books have. Although there are over 24,000 manuscripts for the Bible, it is still the book that gets attacked the most (Tackett et al, 2011). My faith definitely relates to history. I would never want this part of history rewritten. God is the creator of everything. To me, history means His story; God is a huge part of history. He encountered things in the past that someone transcribed into a book, known as the Bible. I am now able to utilize this book by living the life that God wants me to live. An individual’s past determines his/her present. I have encountered things in my past that have taught me valuable lessons. Some have been good things that I would do again, while others were not so good, and I would not …show more content…
When I think of historical revisionism, I think of slavery. I have been taught that slavery was a part of history and, for some, a way of life. I have had a college professor tell me that slavery wasn’t that bad, the slaves weren’t beaten like some people thought, and they were treated well. This tells me that slavery is definitely being rewritten. I know from what I have been taught through history that slavery wasn’t good. Many of them died getting to the United States, but those who didn’t were put on a raised platform, and auctioned for monetary value. Slavery is an awful part of our history, but it occurred. I think many people have an issue with it existing, so they are trying to rewrite history to benefit

    History. Simply explained, history can be resumed as “the study of past events”. Crammed into every education system, history is required in every single school (ranging from elementary, middle, or high schools; even including universities). Unfortunately, what they teach in history might not always be exactly what happened. Sometimes inaccurate accounts of past history are due to bias in historiography. Most often this can be due to a historian’s bias of favoring one side of the story because agrees with their personal, cultural, or just general interests. To give a specific example on the issue, Howard Zinn, an American historian, stated this about Columbus-era explorers and navigators: “To emphasize the heroism of Columbus and his successors as navigators and discovers, and to deemphasize their genocide, is not a technical necessity but an ideological choice. It serves -unwittingly- to justify what was done.” The essence of Zinn’s quote is definitely a fundamental truth; people accept what benefits them more and attempt to hide what doesn’t. This has changed in recent years as historians produce more realistic treement of slavery. One area in which progress has been disappointing is school textbooks. The egregiously racist treatment has been removed from textboks, but for the most part school rextbooks still give little attention to slavery and the discussion presented is usually not illuuminating. One problem here is the economics of school textbooks and the need to meet the editorial demands of large states. Here Texas is a particular problem. American schools have attempted to deal with the racial issue bu designating February as Black History Month. Unfortunately rarely does Black History Month address slavery.
