Dowsing By John Carrier Analysis
The way the author recalls his father's teachings shows how the author regrets losing the secrets his father give him. The first piece of evidence is the father's statement after teaching his son to dowse. The father tells his son that “[dowsing is] something [his] own father taught [him]” (Carrier 95). The son is comparing himself to his father because the son did not succeed in learning to dowse from his father but the father succeeded in learning from his own. Another piece of evidence is his father's further statement. He said that “dowsing [is not] something you learn in school [and it is not] useless" (Carrier 95). The author quotes his father's statement because he totally agrees with his father. It is after his father pass away he …show more content…
In his childhood “[he] was very intoxicated by the game of spelling” (Carrier 94). The game of spelling brought his interest in writing. The father knows that the son is “no longer interested in hearing him tell of his adventures” (Carrier 94) because of the son's new found interest. This proves that the narrator wanted to become an author at a very young age. He became a prolific author who “wrote [many] books” (Carrier 95). If an author does not like to write he or she will never finish even one book. Therefore, he genuinely loves writing. He also seems to be very famous for his stories because “someone began to make a film about [his] village and its inhabitants” (Carrier 95) and “the film people ... [would call him] to take [his] place” (Carrier 96). It shows that he plays an important role in the film they are making. I think he feels proud of himself because people would make a film about him for the stories he writes.
From what I understand from the story I think the author makes the right decision to follow his dream to become a writer but I think it is a pity that his father's secret is now forever

This book has a very good theme but was not written to entertain the mind of a high school teen. The theme of friendship and the theme of telling the truth instead of hiding from it can help you overcome problems with your friend helped me out in life personally. I saw how what someone can see as white lie can produce even worse problems than the problems that would occur for telling the truth. I have been in situations where I could easily get out of a dilemma by lying but it was exceptionally wrong to do so. I thought this story was boring because besides Finny’s death, Finny falling out of the tree, and the “trials” on Gene there wasn’t much action. The writing of Knowles taught me to always do what is right no matter the consequence for it, because there may be greater consequences for not telling the truth.…

Imagine a writer who never shares his writing and who represents fiction as non-fiction. Imagine a young man who wants to be a writer so much that he believes his own "lies." In Tobias Wolff's novel _Old School_, the author poses an ethical dilemma to the reader concerning issues of personal identity and honor. Taking place at a preparatory school in the 1960s, the unnamed narrator struggles with moral issues that surround the development of his authentic self. His desperate desire to win the school's literary contest to meet the famous author Ernest Hemingway results in the narrator's singular experience of plagiarizing another writer's short story. Throughout the novel, Wolff demonstrates that…

As a child, Walter Dean Myers had speech impairment in school. This problem with his speech meant that he had trouble reading regular written or printed words. Soon after an incident in class, which involved a speech to the class, Walter Dean Myers’s teacher noticed that it was much easier for him to read his own written words. This inspired him to write poems and short stories. Later when Walter was seventeen, he dropped out of high school and served in the army for three years. The struggles of being in the army only intensified his love towards writing. Shortly after exiting the army, Walter only had low paying jobs to do such as working in post office, as a messenger, and as a factory interviewer for the New York State Bureau of Labor. To any person; these are all great examples of early life events that affected his writing and his writing style.…

In “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur, throughout the poem the father talks about how proud he is of his daughter. The theme here is power and the daughter shows her power through her writing there no one can take that power away not even her own father: “My daughter is writing a story/I pause in the stairwell, hearing/from the shut door a commotion of typewriter-keys” (Lines 3-5). The world is full of writers of all kinds: novelists, biographers, copy writers, and even bloggers. Every so often, one of those writers will rise above the rest and become a great author—but what exactly does that take? Many qualities have to come together in one person to make his or her writing great, so having the idea for a story alone is not enough; great writers also have to possess talent and originality as well as the dedication required to see a story through to the end.…

George’s false pride is stealthily abundant to me during the story. Curiously rich in overtones of George’s assumed narrative success, we are provided with no absolute proof. One indirect instance, he states openly to his mother that he is “writing immense novels and poems” (p. 160). Although he submitted bits and pieces for the local weekly paper while in high school and college, these student accomplishments do not amount to success in the world of professional writing. However, it is clear that his passion is to be a good writer, “telling how he would steal money to keep from toiling while he wrote a great long novel” (p. 159). The fact remains, nothing substantial has been written, yet.…

When I first read the story I found it relatively uninteresting because there were no huge plot developments of dramatic twist I expected from this short story. After I read it again I realized the prejudice and narrow-mindedness that the father of Nnaemeka demonstrate. It showed me that even close family members can break up your relationship with them just because of a life choice that you made. I was also surprised that the Grandfather never accepted Nnaemeka's wife also he never saw his grandchildren which in my mind is ludicrous.…
