The power and influence of time is a concept that has both puzzled and humbled practically every human since the beginning of our consciousness as a species. Struggling to comprehend and even possibly accept that the destiny of all living things in the world is to die, and that with every second of time passing comes the implication of how the encroaching moment during which we will finally succumb to something, whether it be illness, violence or just old age, has just become that much closer provokes feelings in all of us that are relatively hard to convey and rather uncomfortable to discuss. Time is a human construct. It is how we as a species have defined it to be, no more, no less; the degree of its menace and influence is only to the extent that we allow it to be. Since we as humans define time, there is no conceivable way to defeat it; with its ambiguity and lack of tangibility, there is no way to pinpoint the exact moment in which one would be able to announce a defeat of time, so there is no finite way to declare it a subject of any man, regardless of their power, influence or worldly beauty. Potentially subconsciously, Dorian Gray's change in behavior was a response to the internal issues that came with the realization of his unquestioned and uncontrolled subservience to time, but his was reaction was rather abnormal and uncharacteristic of an average person with any form of the trait of empathy. He tried to outdo time by cutting someone else's short, but there is no way to remove the power of time has over a person. No single man can defeat something that a group of men have
