dont be so serious
Let’s get serious here for a second; a lot of us are way too serious. People think that to get anywhere in life you have to have determination. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the word “Determination” means: the quality that makes you continue trying to do or achieve something that is difficult. We are told are whole lives that if you want to make it in life you have to be willing to make great sacrifices, work long nights, pretty much are a boring stick in the mud. I say, just like a great role model of mine “why so serious?”

Elbert Hubbard said “Do not take life to seriously. You will never make it out alive.” We spend our whole lives working so hard and doing things that we have been told to do our whole lives that we have lost our sense of humor. We make every situation so serious that nothing is fun anymore. I think that every situation in the world has the potential to be funny; but we’re told a time and a place. “Bryndyn there is a time and a place”, those eight words have been said to me countless times. You know when I think the time and place is? It’s now. There is no better time or a place then here right now while were on earth. Tell a joke; make people laugh, because you’re not going to be around forever to do so.

We spend so much time worrying and taking things so seriously that we turn everyday situations into problems. Things like going to the grocery store can turn into a big hassle that causes you way too much stress. “If I leave now I could probably beat traffic. But then I’d be stuck on the way home and who even knows how packed the store is. I should’ve went this morning then it would be done, but now I have to go right now when it’s most packed”. How about you just chill out! Wait in a line it’s not a big deal. Sing a song in your head while waiting, bring someone with you. I can’t tell you how many good memories I have at the grocery store just from me and my mom goofing around in there. It’s okay to have fun.

    Patsy Rodenburg Analysis

As a reader, I am better able to connect to Patsy Rodenburg’s words than to Kristin Linklater’s. Rodenburg is immensely honest and open about her own journey and I find many similarities between where I am at and where she used to be at. Most specifically, I love her words on laughter. Like Rodenburg, I, too, have had this deep insecurity that I may perhaps be incapable of humor. Especially as a woman who wants to enter a male-dominated field such as law and intelligence, I have been trained to control my voice and, thereon, my laugher as well.…

Mark Twain said, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Twain had the belief that people need to surround themselves with others who will encourage them to be their best. Those who belittle others who are in pursuit of something ambitious are not the kind of people who are pursuing their own passions and desires. Those are people that may never have received words of encouragement to set their feet down and run. Also, those who belittle others ambitions have not had someone to walk alongside them in life and speak greatness to them. They have not been around the great ones themselves. The small are missing something that they cannot see. The influence of people around us can encourage us to greatness or easily help us to believe we are inept at achieving something bigger than what we know.…

Humor has been used for many generations with an unclear origin. Over time as society progresses, the kind of humor produced adjusts to what fits the culture. One thing doesn’t change however, and that is the purpose of humor which is to provide laughter and amusement for whoever is aware of the topic. In this day and age, we live in a time of humor that is much different than the humor that took place a hundred, or even fifty years ago. Back in 2004, Alain de Botton argued in his nonfiction book Status Anxiety, how humor can be used to not only entertain but it also allows messages regarding society to be safely expressed without the danger that could occur if stated directly. For this reason, Botton believes they play a key role in society.…

“Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and why not”, said by George Bernard Shaw (miscellaneous quotes). In society today, many people go about with things and don’t ask why they do such matter. In the article, “Corn-pone opinions” by Mark Twain, he uses a good example: he states that “fashion has established itself: it is admired, now, and no one laughs”. In other words, fashion is created, and people go along with it and never ask why they do so. Alain de Botton argues that humorists are not to entertain but “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly”. In agreement, humorists play a vital role in society.…

Laughter is something that pleases the mind. Throughout our entire lives, we search for things that make us feel, even for the slightest amount of time, happy. Billy Collins writes, “Chalk dust flurrying down in winter, / nights dark as a blackboard” (Page 535). He is referring to happy times as a teenager. Being more than happy when the snow comes and school is out. Having nothing but time to be out of the house at all times of the night. Through conscious decisions, we forget about life. Sometimes even forgetting about the future.…

Life was consumed by constant orders, labor, malnutrition, disease, and murder in the concentration camps. Yet somehow the human psyche in many individuals was able to endure throughout these imprisonments. Men and women were almost completely dehumanized during this genocide, but their psyche survived it. People had to find little things to keep themselves content and to nurture their psyche. “Humor was another of the soul’s weapons in the fight for self-preservation” (63). Humor allows a person to escape a situation and rise above it, even if only for a short time. Humor can never be taken away from anyone because it is naturally within us. Humor within the concentration camps allowed people, for even a split second, to feel like they were free and not in this confinement. “The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humorous light is some kind of a trick learned while mastering the art of living” (64). It would be much more rigorous on the human psyche if one could not escape every so often and realize the humor in something. Humor allowed people to become more relaxed and release some stress, allowing the human psyche to stay healthier.…

But to be able to accept and laugh, we need first to have a reason, or a perspective – a way of seeing, believing and knowing - that will enable us to do so. We need to have a different version, a different story - one that is no less true than the one we have always accepted and taken for granted as the only possible story, the story that is “problem-saturated”. To the extent that questions are creatively asked, to that extent are new stories and more satisfying outcomes created.…
