One reason Donald Trump should not have been elected is because he has said he will implement several policies that will violate the 8th amendment. The 8th amendment clearly states, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.” Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed that he would bring back waterboarding as a form of punishment against terrorists, who are “cutting off the heads of Christians.” His plans to reinstate waterboarding, along with techniques that are “so much worse” and “much stronger” support a punishment that is cruel and unusual. I believe that waterboarding is fully unconstitutional. Personally, as an American Citizen, the fact that our president-elect would so heartily endorse a cruel and unusual punishment is appalling. Right now, America's system is an antiquated and obsolete process which allow a Candidate to win even if the majority of people voted against them. This happened in the 2016 Presidential Election. Over the history of the 56 U.S. elections, five of them have resulted in the less popular Candidate winning. If you work out the percentage of mistakes, is an 8.9 percent failure rate. This is an abysmal percentage of failure for one of the most powerful nations in the world. According to politico.com, Hilary Clinton won the popular vote by 1,031,246 votes. Because of the Electoral College, though, Donald Trump is our new president-elect, despite most people not wanting him to win. The fate of America, along with countless other countries that will be influenced by it, will be decided by a system that will not elect the president that most people voted
