Dolphin Trainer A Dolphin Trainer is a dream career of many people! Almost everyone has seen a dolphin, read or had some type of interaction with them. It’s amazing how such these beautiful creatures can perform such cool tricks. It’s even more amazing what the trainers have to do to instruct the animals to perform the tricks, it might seem easy while they are cueing the dolphins, but there is so much more behind of all of it. What people don’t see is the unique dolphin-human relationship, planning and time they put in. Dolphin trainers have to go through a lot of school, and training before they make it their profession. Just like any other marine mammal trainer, the challenges and dangers are just a part of their everyday life.

When choosing dolphin training as your profession, you have to realize what you’re actually getting into. There is a lot more than just playing and teaching the mammal a trick. You can prepare yourself in high school by taking extra math and science classes such as Marine Bond | 2
Biology and Chemistry. Many trainers pursue in Biology, Marine Biology, Psychology, and Animal Behavior in college. There isn’t any specific college for marine mammal training, but the college you choose will depend in your interest. Once you get your degree in the field you want to study then you can start the stages of becoming a dolphin trainer which include many different methods of studying and learning the animal’s behavior. Brown says “Training is a very much two-way communication process” (20) the trainer must adjust to the dolphin also; you cannot force the animal to do something that it does not wish to do.

While a formal education is very important, the only real way to gain the understanding and skills needed to successfully care for and train marine mammals is by working with them under the supervision and tutelage of senior

This is where trainers come in and try to train these large wild animals to do things not in their nature. "They are under a constant low level of stress simply by being confined when they are built to travel long distances,” (Bubar). As a baby whales growing up, they tend to stick by their mothers and family. Orcas might look gentle, nice, and harmless, but when pushed, they are an entirely different wild animal. The trainers are at their own great risks, the killer whales are very large and dangerous animals that are being forced to do tricks and listen on command. Eventually outbreaks would happen more often, unfortunately Dawn was the victim. The movie ended with her performance, everything seemed to be going so well, as she got into the water, Tilikum seemed normal, and then outrage broke out, leaving Dawn killed which was very tragic.…

    After Seaworld Analysis

I believe that no matter how trained you are, animals can be unpredictable especially ones with history of violence. Even the workers at SeaWorld didn't know the history of Tilikum and possibly why he acted out with Dawn. Though I think these enormous whales should not be captured for entertainment purposes, not all of these public places are for profit. Seaworld is a profit organization, as stated “ A corporation like SeaWorld only changes because it's financially prudent to do so” (Wallace) In a way I don’t support seaworld. I support zoos, aquariums and circuses if they are not harming animals for entertainment of money. SeaWorld has had many incidents with animals and I think that the places like aquariums and zoos, that are not for profit organizations try their best to create a habitat safe for the animals living there. “They feel that zoos and aquariums, for the most part, try to recreate a natural environment for the animals and, more importantly, don't disrespect them by having them perform all day long and do things that are completely unnatural for them.” (Wallace) They try to remake their habitats, so that the rescued…

“A common criticism of SeaWorld is that its trainers “make” the animals perform in shows. But in reality, we didn’t make the animals do anything. After all, it would be impossible to make a 9,000-pound creature do something it didn’t want to do. Shows are simply another type of interaction between animal and trainer.” (Mindbodygreen,…

    Killer Whales Research

This Killer Whale, Keiko, was born in the wild and captured around the age of two. He was then sold and transferred from Iceland to an amusement park in Mexico, where he lived in a single pool without contact with any other Orcas from 1985 to 1996. The amusement park had a few bottle nosed dolphins in the same program, but for the most part Keiko was alone. Later, Keiko was conditioned to follow a boat and was taken out regularly to do open ocean swims as a part of a research study. During these swims, Keiko was in proximity of other local Killer Whales and eventually his human interaction was limited over the course of a few months. Initially, Keiko’s interaction with the wild Orcas was partial. He and the pod generally moved away from one another. After a few open ocean swims and being taken directly toward the pod, Keiko began to follow the pod within a local vicinity. The pod seemed to tolerate his presence and thus Keiko began to travel with the group. However, after Keiko’s release back into the wild, researchers studied how often Keiko approached the boat. The group reported that he approached the boat roughly sixteen times, this was with minimal interaction on the researchers’ part. (Simon) Moreover, after captivity and immense amounts of human captivity and no social interaction with other Killer Whales for a period of eleven years, releasing Keiko into the wild showed extreme behavioral differences from other wild Orcas in the area. Since the social construct of a pod of Kill Whales is extremely strong, often times outsider whales are left to swim at a certain distance from the pod. Observations were made of Keiko swimming in the vicinity of the group, but there were no observations or research made that showed Keiko apart of the social…

Who does not love to see dolphins and whales flipping and doing tricks? Although the animals look happy and unharmed, there is a dark truth behind the captive marine life in amusement parks and zoos. Yes, attending zoos and marine life amusement parks are a part of childhood; but recently researchers have discovered just how cruel the environment is for the marine life in captivity. After studies of comparing the quality of life of marine animals in the wild and in captivity, there are multiple examples shown in Blackfish, PETA, and the Animal Welfare Institute that show that animals prosper and live longer in their natural habitats. Due to the cruelty endured by the captivated Orcas, all the SeaWorld parks should be shut down and the Orca whales should be set free to prevent further demise to their species.…

The slaughtering of the dolphins is carried out using very cruel methods. Dolphins are acoustic animals meaning they are sensitive to sound; it is how they collect their information. The Japanese use this to their advantage and exploit their sensitivity and by whacking metal pipes along the sides of their boats, creating a loud, thundering sound. This creates a barrier of sound and drives them towards the bay as they attempt to escape the fearful noise, marking the beginning of a long and torturous process.…

You’re in the ocean attempting to swim, but only this time, instead of moving your arms over your head and your legs up and down, your only moving your lower half, up and down. You swim for a period of time and then suddenly realize your oxygen supply is slowly running out. You swim to the surface and breathe, then your right back at it, swimming with no cares in the world. If you haven’t realized it by now, you’re a bottlenose dolphin.…
