The Federative Republic of Brazil, located in South America, is the largest country in Latin America and the fifth-largest country in the world (Burns, 1993). The roots leading to the establishment of the federative republic began more than half a millennium ago. In 1500, a Portuguese expedition left Portugal headed for the southern tip of Africa, to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and then go north to India (Skidmore, 1999). However, the lead ship, commanded by Pedro Álvares Cabral, went off course into the Atlantic eventually reaching what is now the Brazilian state of Bahia (Burns, 1993). They docked in Brazil on April 23, 1500 (Skidmore, 1999).…

Welcome to Brazil! Home of soccer... When thinking of Brazil, some think of the beaches, some think of the food, some think of the Christ the Redeemer statue, and some think of other things. But when I think of Brazil, I think of soccer! In Brazil, soccer is like a religion. At every corner of every street, you'll see people, all ages, playing soccer. At the beach, you'll see people playing soccer. In Brazil, soccer is every where. Brazil and its national team have changed the sport as we know it. And it all started when a teenager named Pele set foot on the pitch. Now, at 74, he is arguably the greatest soccer player ever. Many years later, Ronaldinho came along. Ronaldinho added skill and style, he added a new definition to the word, panna,…

Leaving aside the type of informative introduction which characterizes discussions about Latin America, I prefer to situate the relation between our culture and civilized culture in term less reduced than those which characterize the European observer's analysis. While Latin America bemoans its general wretchedness, the foreign interlocutor cultivates a taste for this wretchedness not as a tragic symptom, but rather as simple formal information for his field of interest. Neither does the Latin convey his true wretchedness to civilized man nor does civilized man truly comprehend the Latin's wretchedness.…

Brazil is contradictory because its was the last country to abolish slavery but also the first to claim that it was a racial democracy. Most people might not know that Brazil has its racial problems and that it has been going on for a long time. Brazilian race relations and conceptions of race are somewhat different from the United States. In Brazil most African descendents are people live in slums called the favelas.
