Dog Fighting
There has been much debate on the issue of dog fighting. It has been said that there are two sides to every story, but in this case there is only one. Dog fighting is immoral because dogs do not have a say in whether they fight or not. Generally in all cases it is a matter of life and death for the animals. It is ridiculous to think that something so cruel could even be thought of as moral, although there are many people around the world that will say dog fighting is considered morally correct. The number of people supporting dog fighting in the United States alone is unbelievable. There are an estimated 40,000 people involved in professional dog fighting (Dogfighting a booming, 2007). This does not include all the street fighters who are not part of professional organizations. “In 2003, the city of Chicago alone recorded and responded to 1,093 animal fights” (Gibson, 2005). Dog fighting is widely spread throughout all of America. The people involved are not only harming and killing animals, but they are also breaking the law by practicing this. Dog fighting is illegal in all fifty states because it is inhumane. Here in Michigan as well as many other states, dog fighting is considered a felony. The practice of this organized underground crime has been increasing over the years even with laws protecting the animals. We as humans have five senses, to touch, smell, taste, see, and hear; dogs also have these same exact senses. The fact that dogs can feel when they are touched should be reason enough not to put the animal in the ring to fight. Dogs can feel if they are being pet, as well as if they are being harmed. They can feel pain while being harmed just as humans can. In our society it would be seen as unjust and wrong to force a human to fight another person, and this is because the human could possibly be seriously injured. People need to realize that it is the same for dogs. The dogs could get seriously injured or even die in these kinds of vicious fights.

The American Pet Products Association states that 56 million American households own a dog. That’s half of all homes in the United States. Half of us know the affection and companionship of a dog. Half of us may even consider our dogs as a part of the family, and half of us would understand the pain of losing one of our pets. Laws are now being passed that are banning certain dogs from cities, counties, states, and even entire countries. It’s called Breed Specific Legislation, or BSL for short, and its sole purpose is to remove and euthanize dogs from American homes that are considered dangerous. BSL does not work, and should not be considered because breed identification methods are flawed, no dog breed is truly more dangerous than another, and the cost to enforce breed specific legislation is high.…

American motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” (Dyer, 2012). This quote holds true in relation to the public’s perception of “pit bull” type dogs. Pit bulls are often judged by their muscular bodies, large head, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are consistently portrayed in the media as aggressive as well. Because of this, pit bulls face a variety of different obstacles to overcome. From breed specific legislation (BSL), to dog fighting, to homelessness and euthanasia, the list of obstacles to overcome may seem impossible. However, “Experts say that five factors affect a dog 's tendency to bite: owner quality (quality of care, level of supervision provided); degree to which the dog has been habituated to people; training received (level and type); behavior of the victim; and genetic predisposition to be dangerously aggressive” (Pet Owner Liability, 2001).Only through education on the true nature of the breed and promotion of responsible ownership can pit bulls be helped.…

This research is supported by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who is now a Pittsburg Steelers quarterback, was convicted of dog fighting. However he was not caught or convicted for seven whole years, which was enough time for him to abuse and kill many dogs. Vick abused his dogs and trained them for the sole purpose of fighting against one another in a pit, and he encouraged them to cause a lot of damage to one another or even kill another canine. Dogs on Vick’s property were penned in small cages or chained to a buried car axle. It is said when the dogs were no longer useful or able to fight they were wet down and electrocuted, hanged, beaten, drowned, shot, or slammed against the ground. Vick is one of many famous people to join the dog fighting world and house underground fights…

    Breed Specific Legislation

Who should be punished when a dog goes violent the dog or the owner or both? Should we punish all large breed dogs for the actions of one bad dog? These questions come to mind when thinking about the new laws that have been passed against pit bulls. After years of discrimination of people, we are now discriminating against breeds of dogs. Even though aggressive dogs tend to bite more, I am against the idea of breed specific legislation because it is not the breed of the dog but how it is trained. There are many advocates for BSLs, including the leader of PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals). This is an excerpt from the leader of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, and her rational for dog banning and the killing of these innocent animals.…

    1. Thugs who need a tough dog to feel tough intentionally doing everything they can to make their dogs mean. This includes, beating, starving, baiting, feeding weird crap like gunpowder....They also never socialize, train, or neuter their dogs. This intentionally creates a dog that is both dog and human aggressive and will most likely kill other pets and end up being euthanized for biting someone.…

Six months ago, almost to the day, my best friend and her new puppy were attacked. She was dog sitting her grandmother’s Mastiff, whom at the time had no previous violent history. She kept the Mastiff and her puppy in separate rooms in order to make sure there were no problems, but that wasn’t enough. One day, out of nowhere, the Mastiff broke down the door separating them and went on a full-fledged attack toward the puppy. My friend tried to make it out of the door of the house, but to no avail. The Mastiff bit her by the arm and dragged her to the ground forcing the puppy from her arms. He then proceeded to viciously rip apart her puppy right in front of her with her unable to do anything about the attack. Because this dog had no previous history of being violent, he was only quarantined for a short time period. But if this dog had been a Pit Bull, he would have been euthanized immediately whether there was a prior history or not. According to my audience analysis 87% of the class does not believe that there is such thing as a breed of dog that is born naturally violent and dangerous, but for the 13% of the class that does, when asked to name that breed, did not identify only a single breed. Working at a vet hospital, I see all different breeds of dogs and their temperaments. Although there are some nervous Pit Bulls that come in, there are also very sweet and gentle ones as well. On the other hand, I see many dogs of different breeds that are more on edge and prone to bite; Huskies, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs. So what makes one breed any more dangerous than another? Today I am here to talk to you about the discriminating, Maryland law that states the dog breed, Pit Bulls, based on the court ruling reported in the Baltimore Sun by Ian Duncan, are deemed “inherently dangerous”…

They use pit-bulls for dog fighting due to pit-bulls are quick to learn, eager to please and easy to handle. According to The American Pit-Bull Terriers, “Once a pit-bull accepts you as their master, they will gladly lay down their own life to please you.” The breed has an incredible sense of determination; once they start, they will not stop until they cannot keep going anymore or until their owner tells them to stop. The desire to complete their task combined with their unbelievable sense of loyalty makes them an easy target for dog fighters and criminals alike. The myth that pit-bulls love to fight is just a myth, it’s come from the human exploitation and their sense of determination. They may not start the fight; however, if one does start, they will not back down. Pit-bulls are not just great for fighting; they can be used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and even therapy dogs. With their farm background; a well trained pit-bull can be used as an exceptional herding dog as…

Did you know that for over one hundred years the Pit Bull was called the “Nanny Dog” by Americans, and was the breed that symbolized our country? One of the most famous Pit Bulls was Petey from The Little Rascals. For generations people got a Pit Bull to keep their children safe because these dogs were the most trustworthy of any breed with children and adults. Now the Nanny Dog is being persecuted by the media, and being called the hellion breed that frightens people. Even though plenty of other dogs bite people, they only publish stories about Pit Bulls. “Poodle bites man” is not a very eye catching headline. The media publicizes crazy myths, and they label any dog a Pit Bull even if it is not. The media also zeros in on the specifically negative and extreme incidents; they often do not provide the circumstance surrounding the incidents, and also neglect to mention important statistical information and comparisons to other similar incidents. Being a Pit Bull owner, and having many friends who own them as well, I know that the media is incorrect in their portrayal of the Pit Bull. They are the most loving and gentle breed I have ever known.…

How would you feel if your dog that you love more than anything in the world couldn’t go with you when you moved homes because of ban laws and you had to euthanize your best friend? Over 1,500 pit bulls get euthanized each year because of these ban laws. “Aggression” is why these ban laws have been made and it’s not the dogs fault it’s the behavioral decisions of the owners.…

About twelve years ago, my aunt and uncle owned two dogs of the pit bull breed. These dogs might as well have been their kids; they even signed our Christmas cards every year. In one day, everything they knew had disappeared. A team of police officers were supposed to raid the house next door for possession of drugs, but instead, raided my aunt and uncle’s house. Their two dogs were lying on the couch when the cops broke in the door. Because of the dog’s breed, the cops automatically opened fire on the innocent dogs. Blood marks showed one dog lying in the corner and the other lying on the couch, both helpless. Now, the government wants to ban this breed from cities across the nation. They are uneducated on this breed or obviously have never owned one, for if they had, there would have never been a ban on these affectionate, energetic, loyal dogs.…

    Animal Bill of Rights

The last reason that animals don’t need a Bill of Rights, is that humans come first over animals with low cognitive ability. For example, they talk about how a fish can remember its path to run away from predators. But that doesn’t prove that they feel pain and shows that they really aren’t smart at all. They say, “they can learn geometrical relationships and landmarks”(Braithwaite). Another reason is that we haven’t even defined pain for ourselves,…

Not all pit bulls are aggressive ; pit bulls are trained to be aggressive for dog fighting and to be guard dogs. Pit bulls are used to fight but not all pit bulls though. Organizations responsible for placing dogs seized from dogfighting investigations often must determine if a particular dog should be euthanized because it was too dangerous or if it’s safe to place the dog in an adoptive home. We collected data from 279 pit bull type dogs seized as evidence in four organized dogfighting investigations conducted from 2012-2015. In the evaluation, dogs were exposed to a variety of situations that stimulated what they would experience in a typical shelter or home environment, including being petted and…
