Does the FIU Cheerleading team deserve more funding?
Cheerleading has historically always been a sport that does not get the recognition it should. It has always been a sport for only females, or feminine males, for those who do not have much muscle, for those who are not good at sports, and for those who are not academically excelled. Thanks to the Cheerleading Worlds, for the past few years cheerleading has been considered a sport, and recognized for its intense physical activity, it is also known as the third most dangerous sport on TheTopTens.com. U of M created this as a fraternity called Gamma Sigma in 1903, and it was not until the 1920’s when females began to join the spirit team. Therefore, this helps take away that Cheerleading is meant for females, when males are the ones that started the sport. This is also when cheerleading began to change, instead of just saying “Go! Panthers! Go!” they also began using pom-poms, including gymnast and dancing skills, and began making routines. The National Cheerleading Association was then opened in 1948 by Lawrence Herkimer (the “Godfather of Cheerleading”) and he began to create workshops for cheerleading …show more content…
For example, associations such as National Cheerleading Association, and the Universal Cheer Association are some companies that give away cheerleading bids. There are approximately 40 companies that give out 12 Worlds bids, which makes a total of 480 cheerleading teams eligible to attend the cheerleading Worlds. This competition is the equivalence of the Soccer World Cup, and even the Olympics. All of the “cheer-lebrities” are attending and competing at this competition, they expect to get their picture taken, and autographs just as other sports sensations such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Shawn White, and Serena
