Does Kal's Happen In 'The Moral Logic Of Guilt'
Everybody in life has regrets. There’s no way around it. Even if it might not be as severe as others regrets, we all have events that come to mind. We all believe things shouldn’t have happened the way they panned out. That’s not the real lesson you should get however. As a christian, people believe their should be no such thing as fear or uncertainty. If God should let it happen to you, there must have been a reason. In the story The Moral Logic of Guilt, the author shows how soldiers feel after they go through dangerous situations. One of the privots guarding a Bradley fighting vehicle, was killed after a gun misfire. No one knew that would happen. So was it really someone’s fault? The Captain in charge felt responsible for the errors.

He had lost his childhood friend, Kal, in a giant wave. They were on a nearby beach exploring. Suddenly, the seventh man noticed the winds picking up and decided it was time to take shelter again. He had called out to Kal, but Kal didn’t seem to notice. After repeated attempts Kal had heard him, but it was unfortunately too late. The wave had swallowed up both of them. After a few days the seventh man woke up in hospital. Fortunately a neighbor had seen what happened and took care of him. No one ever found his friend Kal however. The seventh man eventually healed. Not from his fear of what happened on that beach though. He moved away and never wanted to come back to his childhood town. “I stayed away from my hometown for over 40 years.” ( Murakami, pg 141). One day he decided he needed to go back. He went to the beach and suddenly wasn’t afraid anymore. He swayed in the water and let the waves wash every fear he had still inside of him. Even though the seventh man felt he could’ve saved his friend, it still had to happen. Kal was put here to help the seventh man learn how to let go of things and not to fear them.
