The Impact of Violence in Video Games on the Intellectual Development of Young People: Grand Theft Auto
Since the creation of video games there has been much discussion over whether the benefits of video games outweigh the negative effects on young people, or vice versa. The technology for video games is constantly innovating, and video games for children has become more of a lifestyle than a hobby. In a study by the United States Department of education, 8 in 10 of youth in America plays videogames, and 8.5% of those kids are classified as addicted to video games. Apart from the youth spending over 20+ hours playing games which directly leads to poor schooling, there are also multiple psychological effects of playing videogames. Which retards the intellectual development of young people. Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on September 17 of 2013, and since then has broken 7 Guinness world records. Including the highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours ($800 million). Grand theft auto is a open world action adventure game, that allows the player to control the games character in a game world based on Southern California. The game gives the players ultimate freedom and combines both violence and wealth of the character to create the ‘dream’ life in a game setting. It can already seen that the potential harms that the game can bring to young people with still developing minds. But beneath the obvious effects of the game, there are deeper psychological effects through continuous exposure to Grand Theft Auto. With violence and the virtual world realities being predominant issues with video games. Grand theft auto takes both to the extreme as the themes of the game perfectly carries out the issues. Upon research and real world incidents that prove video games to be harmful to the intellectual development of young people, Grand theft auto may be the top dog of all games as it combines all of the dangerous aspects a video game can have.

    Video games are basically known as a staple among American teenagers. Many teenage boys and even some girls spend hours of their day staring at the TV screen and rapidly pushing buttons on a controller. Many of the top selling games in America strongly involve violence in their gameplay. These types of games raise many questions about how they affect the people playing the games. Are there negative consequences or are these claims just made up? There is research to back up both claims but the negative effects of violent video games seem to overpower the positives of recreational violent video game play. Playing video games can also become an addictive distraction. Many avid gamers can spend hours at a time glued to their TVs playing on their Xboxes, PS3s, and other gaming consoles. This time spent playing games can take away from other activities. Important things like schoolwork and grades can be affected by spending all one’s time playing games instead of focusing on more important things. It can cause people that play the games to go to sleep super late in the night. The students then have to wake up early and go to school tired and will not be able to focus and stay awake to learn the material being taught. Video games also spur a sedimentary lifestyle.     After review of the publication, Game On, a Harvard Health Letter, I discovered that the social and cultural ramifications of video games are of high debate upon many parents and adults. Games are played by people of all ages and sexes but the vast majority of “gamers” are teenage boys. This is worry some considering they are attracted to action games with bloodshed, violence and explicit content. In Grand Theft Auto, a best seller, the players sell drugs on the streets while shooting at gangs and buying prostitutes, what we in America consider violent behavior.     Does playing a video game make you prone to commit real-life violence? This question has been an issue since the very early 90's when violent games like Doom and Wolfenstein were released, but only in the last half a decade or so (mainly since the incident at Columbine, Colorado, 1999 – when it was revealed that the teenage shooters were avid video game players) has it really come to the majority's attention. The key issue that both sides can't agree on is whether people should be allowed to play violent games or not.
