Does Competition Bring Out the Best in You?
Competition, contest between individuals, groups, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources; the act or process of striving consciously and unconsciously for an objective, may it be position, profit or a prize. It arises whenever at least two parties strive for a goal which cannot be shared.

Competition brings out the best as well as the worst in humanity. It encapsulates that both good and bad can come out in a competition. It is great when there is fair play and winners and losers are gracious. Competition becomes nasty when people have to win even when they are wrong or when they convince people that they are right even when they know less than the next person.

Competition can allow you to really hone in on your skills. You have to give all to win, or you would be regretting the loss for years to come. In order to win, we had to get along with everyone on. You have to believe in yourselves, but most of all, you have to use all of the competitive skills that we had learned throughout our lives from parents, coaches, and our own experiences.

Some change, others don’t. A game is a game, and if someone can’t accept that then it’s his/her own problem. Most people understand that playing to win is better than playing not to lose, but what very few understand is that playing just for fun is even better. Sure, winning is fun, but the feeling never lasts. And there are things that are more rewarding than winning at stupid games. If you’re attached to the outcome of a game you’re a bloody fool.

Whether it be fighting to receive a promotion, or to create the next best product, competition is inevitable. At state competitions the stakes are that much higher which result in a drive deep within. Having missed the chance to go to state my sophomore year by just one place, I had a goal to not be defeated when my opportunity came around the following year. The state competition is a whole new ball game, no home field advantage, no fans, and even faster pitchers. Having swung and missed a couple times in previous years, it was time for a grand slam. My competitive drive was awakened at these various competitions, and will continue to prosper throughout my education and career. The motivation created due to my competitiveness makes me a tough opponent on any level.…

Competition can help kids learn how to win and lose gracefully. Many people believe that competition is good for kids and some people have even written books about what they think about competition. According to Po Bronson, author of book Top Dog: The Science of Winning and Losing, “If kids don’t learn to lose they’re going to feel entitled to win,” said Bronson. “They’re also going to make a connection that fear of losing is going to prevent them from taking the risk in the first place. And what kids do need to learn is losing is not that big a deal. They need to learn to lose and go ‘Oh, whatever,’ and move on and keep playing.(“Why Competition Can Be Healthy”). If kids learned how to win and lose gracefully, then there probably wouldn’t…

Competition in most cases is a good thing. Athletes often profit the most from competition because they are forced to give their all on every play. Even a world class athlete, if he has completion will be pushed further and will have to give in to his own agenda (laziness) to remain competitive. Competition in the market place is no different; it combats most company self-interests and instead provokes producers into wealth-creating activities.1 The competitive process I feel also provides an even stronger incentive for producers to operate efficiently and heed the views of consumers.…

Many parents are concerned about competition and its effect on children while others feel that competition is nothing to worry about and push their children to compete and be the best they can be. However, in general moderate competition seems to be good for children, but extreme competition can hurt a child. The behavior of the parents and how they raise their children extremely affect how a child handles competition. Children are not born with a competitive urge they must learn it from their parents and through experiences. Competition can be good for children to develop healthy attitudes about winning and losing. Children become competitive as they practice skills and develop coordination and abilities in daily activities. Competition can encourage growth, confidence and social skills.
