CA 4: History Essay

To begin with this was a difficult decision in determining which subject I wanted to discuss. I would have liked to discuss the Printing press and how innovative the whole process was as between the lectures we had in class and the videos we watched my interest grew in the whole area. I think it’s amazing to see the detail in which the whole process comes together and how intricate it is and the attention to detail involved. The lectures I have attended have really opened my eyes to the amazing intricacies involved. On the CA was another subject that sprang off the page and into my mind. The subject of e-books. I have many many thousands of them and I have a huge interest in them. Coupled with this there is nothing I like better than to sit down with a cup of coffee and get stuck in to a good old read. I chose this subject because I wanted to see where I myself stood in the realm of the pros and cons of e-books.

Do you think that e-books will replace printed books? Please discuss the pros and cons of each.

E-books or Electronic books are not as new as we may think. They officially date back to the very early 1970’s when Michael S Hart a student at the time typed out the American declaration of Independence into the University of Illinois’ mainframe for free distribution giving birth to project Gutenberg. (* Michael S Hart). So they have been around for quite a while now.
My essay will be split into two parts. The pro’s firstly and then the con’s of e-books. I will wrap up with my opinion as to whether or not I think that e-books will replace printed books.

In favour of e-books I must begin with the green element. Our planet relies on oxygen and one of the greatest sources of providing oxygen is trees. They are like a filter in the sense that they take in the harmful elements and give off that most precious gas that we all need to breathe in order to continue

I think ‘real, physical’ books are better than e-books because you can truly own a book. As Mortimer J. Adler, a popular author, says, ‘Full ownership comes only when you have made [the book] a part of yourself, and the best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it.’ When owning an e-book it is more like owning ‘insurance’ than owning a camera. In one case ownership of books is physical and irrevocable but e-books are not and can be taken away easily as Kindle users discovered when one day their copies of 1984 suddenly disappeared. You will know a book that is truly owned because it will be ‘dog-eared and dilapidated, shaken and loosened by continual use, marked and scribbled in from front to back,’ says Adler. It also lets you know how old and how well enjoyed a book was. E-readers are beginning to allow some interactivity, but it is of a very different order. Taking a note in an e-book or making a highlight in it is independent of the book; all of that information is stored apart from the book in a file or a database. Send the book to another person and you’ll find that all of the notes and highlights are gone. They belong to you or your device, not to your book.…

Now in today’s society we are beginning to want to stray away from the idea of having Print materials or otherwise known as print culture. Mainly due to the fact that we are now living in a world where technology is improving so fast that most of everything we rely on is becoming digitalized, and formatted into electronic material. But not to say that we would never use printed material ever again just that they could be less common; they could also eventually become more valuable in the future.
