Learning a foreign language is challenging and it needs a lot of time and effort to be skillful and fuent.
For that, I believe that it is better for children to start learning a foreign language as soon as they start school for the following reasons.
Based on my personal experience, I was raised in French school in Egypt where my native language was Arabic. I started to learn French from the first day in school around the age of five, and I started to learn English at the same school around the age of ten. Now, I am very fluent and more expressive in French and Arabic more than English.
I mentioned this experience to show how learning a foreign language is more effective during chilhood especially in the early stages. The reason for that that children’s brain is like an empty drawer where you can put what ever you want, and everything will be stored forever.
On the other hand, it is hard for young people to store new words different from their native language, or get the right pronounciation of these words because their brain is already full of native words. Also, their brain is always trying to refer the foreign word to the native one in attempt to store it in an easier way.
Also, learning a foreign language during chilhood exposes children to the culture of the foreign country leading them to be more open minded and distinguished in their future. It also saves a lot of time because the foreign language is a part of your study in school, you do not need to take extra course after graduation For example, when I was applying for a job, my boss was impressed that I was speaking three languages that helped us in our communications with other international companies.
Finally, I think that children should start learning more than one foreign language in school, in order to save time and to be perfect in speaking that language.
