Do Work Hours Affects Gpa, an Apa Style Research Paper
Abstract The decision to work or not while going to college is a decision many have to face. The Big Five Personality factors’ have been the focus of much research. In the following study we wish to look at the relationship between work hours and GPA, work hours and Extraversion, and work hours and Neuroticism. The study used 98 subjects who took two self inventories. The results indicated that there was no significant relationship between any of the variables tested. Neuroticism was approaching significance.

A decision facing most college students while attending school is to whether or not to work. Current economic times have probably increased the need for more students to make the choice to work. Student participation in the workforce has a number of likely consequences(Bradley 2006). For example, the most frequently cited reason for working is financial necessity, and the most common reason for not working is likely interference with studies (Lucas & Lammont, 1998). Since Grade Point Average is a high predictor of going on after college, something very common for Psychology students, this could affect one’s decision regarding the choice to work. Of course, not everyone has the choice to work, for some it is a necessity. Of the Big Five Personality scales, people who score high on Extraversion tend to enjoy being active, have lots of energy and tend to be more sociable. Students with personality patterns characterized by high independence combined with high Extraversion were more likely to engage in paid work, and congruence of interests combined with a low score on tough-mindedness fosters a larger share of study time. (Brandstätter, H., & Farthofer, A. 2003). People who score high on Neuroticism tend to be anxious, depressed and less likely to be social. Looking at the above research, the following relationships were looked for:

    The personality traits that were examined were openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neurosis. Based off the scores of the personality traits, a life satisfaction score was given out of 100 points. The national average for males can be used as a baseline. By looking at figure 1, one can see that my individual life satisfaction score is 6.5 points higher than the national male average and 10.75 points higher than the class average for males. This could be because of my significantly higher conscientiousness score, which was 3 points higher than both averages, and my below average neurosis score, which was approximately 3 points lower than both averages. A high conscientiousness score can come from people who have a strong mental state of being. A conscientiousness person is someone who takes the time to analysis a situation before just jumping into it. Also, scoring low in neurosis is an important factor in having a high life satisfaction score. Neurosis comes from having a low mental state; it causes stress, fear, jealousy, and loneliness. Experiencing these negative emotions can cloud a person’s mind and inhibit them from finding flow. If a person is unable to find their flow and is brought down from negative emotions, it can be difficult for that person to be happy.     There has been an influx of students majoring in humanities and education, such as psychology and teaching, which has led to structural unemployment once the students enter the workforce. Structural unemployment is defined by Investopedia as, “a mismatch between what companies need and what workers can offer skill wise,” meaning that too many people are offering the same skills to companies, and no applicants are standing out with what they can do. Economists such as Mark Weinstock believe that structural unemployment has led to, “A decline in the LFPR, because no company wants to hire all the workers who have the same skills from the same field that they acquired during college.” Many college students now are going into “easier” majors with higher grade inflation, such as psychology, because they believe that having a high GPA will correlate with their starting salary. Jane S. Halonen, Ph.D. the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of West Florida did a report on psychology majors, and found that, “there is a grade inflation, which may have lead to the popularity increasing in the major.” Here, students are picking a major that has a low demand for work, but a high supply for entry-level position. This means that a majority of people entering the workforce after college are unable to secure a position, which leads to them being a portion of the Labor Force Participation Rate that is actively searching for a job. The goal for those entering the Civilian Labor Force is to find a major that has high demand for work once they graduate, and a small increase in growth over time.     After reviewing the “Trait Theories” in chapter four, specifically the “Big Five”, I have come to learn that researchers believe that personalities can be described and evaluated in five traits.
