19 November 2013 Do violent video games contribute to youth violence? Video games do not contribute violence in majority of children but there is a small group that is at risk. “normal” children aren’t affected but mentally challenged kids can be. Although there are no studies that can show hard evidence for either side there are trends that lean towards the no affect side.
Studies show that “normal” children are not affected by violent video games. “Playing violent video games can make some adolescents more hostile, particularly those who are less agreeable, less conscientious and easily angered. But for others, it may offer opportunities to learn new skills and improve social networking” (Hamilton) Kids without mental disabilities or defects are less likely to get violent because of video games. It can in fact teach them to be more social and teach them skills. "Recent research has shown that as video games have become more popular, children in the United States and Europe are having fewer behavior problems, are less violent and score better on standardized tests. Violent video games have not created the generation of problem youth so often feared." (Ferguson) While the production and sales of video games has quadrupled in the past 20 years, youth problems, including assault, murders, rapes, and domestic violence, has steadily decreased. For most kids the games aren’t dangerous but teach good skills to have, skills such as hand eye coordination, reaction time, and social skills. It can teach kids how to communicate with each other and teach them computer skills that can help them in the future. Children with preexisting mental disorders are more likely to be influenced by games. “A "perfect storm" of traits for children who are most likely to become hostile after playing violent video games, Those traits are: high neuroticism (e.g., easily upset, angry, depressed, emotional, etc.), low

One out of the many people that disagrees with this argument is Melissa Henson from the Parent Television Council. From Henson’s point of view, she believes that video games make teenagers more violent than they are already are. Violent crimes and aggression can be motivated by violent video games. Columbine school shooters(Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold) and theater shooter(James Holmes) all played these games. They would play these games for long hours daily. Studies show violence is motivated by the games that kids are playing. They act out these violent and illegal actions on their games and then do them in real life. Most of the teens in todays generation can honestly say they have played a violent video game at least one time in their lives. Therefore, they have had to act out a violent action. There are many ways this can affect a child's behavior in a negative way.…

As a person who has been babysitting for about six years, I can attest to the fact that the children who played violent video games were more aggressive than the children who were interested in art or sports. Violent video games teach children that violence is acceptable and fun at the same time, have been proven to lead to aggressive behaviors in children, and also desensitize children. The violent acts depicted in video games are morphing the minds of young children, allowing them to think that gun violence and killing is a recreational…

After reading the yes side of do video games lead to violence, I’m going to have to say I disagree with them. Because if that was the case then every little kid that played a violent game would try and do what happen in the video game but they don’t. Yes, they might get more aggressive but that don’t mean it’s because of the video game. A lot of violence comes from how the kid was raise and what he or she has seen from their elders. In the research that was provide the highest time of risk to gain violence for kids was between ages 9-12 and 15-18. But this is not just them using research by video game they been using television and movies. In some ways I can see where video games can raise aggressive. But they just didn’t use that to figure out if it was just the video games causing it to rise, it could of raise because of the movie or television that he or she watched. So there for their research is incorrect for the question that they are asking.…

However, Video Games have faced a lot of criticisms especially with the introduction of violent games. Since majority of the gamers are teenagers; it is believed that these games affect the growing minds of these gamers and have made them violent. However, I do not support this statement as violent games do affect the gamers but it is not a long-term effect. As stated by Kyle Orland, “violent video games don't cause any long-term psychological harm”(2011). Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before committing their crimes than the average person in the general population. The overwhelming majority of kids who play do not commit antisocial acts. The strongest risk factors for school shootings centered on mental stability and the quality of home life, not media exposure. The moral panic over violent video games is doubly harmful.…

For the last two Decades researchers have investigated whether or not video games cause violent behavior. During this period of time there have been multiple violent events in the world and people make the assumption that the violent behavior is caused by video games. To my experience I would have to agree with this statement and say that video games do cause violent behavior because I have encountered someone's behavior, I have seen the development of how realistic the games look like, and I have personally felt the sensation of playing the games myself.…

Video game violence is an increasing problem in today’s youth with violence as one of the most popular themes. Games such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty are among the most popular games and have been scientifically proven to have a major effect on teens. Many people try to argue that there is a difference in the effects between genders, however it has been proven wrong. Video games have the same effects as other forms of entertainment but do not get attacked like video games because the other forms are much larger than video games and have a much wider audience. Violence in video games is a rising problem in the United States, causing teens to have less self-control and more emotional disturbances, requiring more attention from parents and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).…

For the past 40 years, violent video games have been painstakingly researched and have been found to bear five very hard to argue points.
