Do It Anyway Reflection
The main point of Do It Anyway was not quite activism but advocacy, to get an important point across through supporting those in need. Courtney E. Martin interviewed eight people’s journey to advocacy and the last story stood out me the most. Dena Williams was an eighth grade teacher in Bronx, New York who believed in every single student in her class. When I read her story, I felt some sort of connection to her. Suddenly, I realized that I had a math teacher in tenth grade who believed in me that I could get an A in her class. Without her support, I would not have gotten that A in her class. In seminar class, I learned that there was a difference between activism, advocacy, solidarity, and charity. Now, after learning this, I could see how Dena Williams was an advocate for the children in her class and how she and her students were a solidarity in her community. These two things, advocacy and solidarity combined, changed my views on helping others in my community. Dena William’s story made me rethink for a moment. Her story was kind of an inspiration message, of never losing hope in others. It made me stop and think for a while. I always had a …show more content…
I came up with a few but then shot them down immediately knowing that they were not practical. However, there was one idea that stuck to me, as if it was superglued to my mind for a while after reading about solidarity vs. charity. This too was somewhat not realistic but in a way, it was to me. My idea initially was to create a fund that allows people to donate money to help students with paying for college. However, my idea evolved into an even better idea. Instead of create a fund, what if we created a website that is offered through the KSU website, which allows students to get tips and tricks on how to earn money, getting the best deals, life lesson, etc, to help student’s have a better college

    Before transferring to Georgian Court University, I had already attended two other colleges. I lived in a dorm my freshmen year at Ramapo and decided that was not for me. After leaving Ramapo, I decided to take a few semesters at Brookdale Community College in order to fulfill some requirements while deciding where exactly was the right place for myself to continue with my education. After searching through many brochures and getting first hand details about schools from people I am acquainted with, I was overcome with joy when I found Georgian Court.
