Dns Server
Dear IT Admin:
I am working at two branch offices and have been tasked with where to place Active-Directory Integrated DNS Servers and what type to use.
One of the branch offices is very small (5 users) and has very slow network connectivity. Do I need a DNS Server and, if so, which type of zone should it host?
The second branch office is much larger (about 30 users) and has better network connectivity. Does this office need a DNS Server and, if so, what type of zone would you recommend?
Thank you,
Junior Admin

Good afternoon Junior Admin,
You want to make sure that you are using your resources wisely. So in all actuality you want to use a stub directory for the office containing (5) computers. So the first question I should ask you, are you using a private WAN? Using Server create a stub zone. Your Stub zone is a copy of a zone, but the good thing is that it will only use necessary resources or records for that specific zone. This will allow the network to breathe easy so to speak. Another to think about is that this will cancel out in naming issues between the two offices.
The office with the (30 users) needs a larger, faster and more reliable network. You would want to the integrated Active directory. So in all it creates or configures a different topology but will allow accessibility for zone transfers and copies for deployments in the future along with added security. So in simple terms the two zones are created for stationary and heavy usage, but the directories has to be in communication with each other just in case the company expands.

To add two new branch offices we will need to find a strategy to design a replication process. To implement this we will need to use inter-site replication. Inter-site replication is needed when adding domain controllers located in different sites. We will also need a site link (Site link is a logical, transitive connection between two sites that allows replication to occur) protocol of Remote Procedure Call (RPC) over Internet Protocol (IP) which is the preferred choice for the replication process. This allows you to communicate with network services on various computers and also keep data secure when being transmitted by using both encryption and authentication. We will need to take into consideration the cost, schedule, and frequency of the replication. It’s best to set the schedule for the site link during off-peak business hours to ensure the bandwidth is not bogged down on the WAN, due to replication traffic. Frequency will determine how often information is replicated over the site link. I think the best schedule/frequency for the replication would be every 6/hrs starting at 0600/daily.…

There will be 25 employees at the main office and 15 employees at the two new locations. Each employee will have their own workstation at their employed location. Each employee will have their own unique user id and password to log into their workstations. Each employees profile will be set up so they can log into any workstation at all three locations. All the profiles will be connected to a public shared drive that gives all employees access to all documentation under this drive. Each employee will also have a private drive that will give them access to private documentation at any location they may be working at. There are 10 employees that will be traveling to different locations when needed. Although the employees have the capability of logging onto any workstation and/or customer relations workstation at either location; we will also provide laptops and/or tablets connected to the network they will be able to access their profiles…

Now let’s move on to the second, much larger branch supporting around thirty users and or workstations. You stated that this branch has much better network connectivity than its smaller counterpart. In this case, I would recommend a DNS server set up in the primary zone. The primary zone is the primary source of information. I would also further suggest moving your servers from the smaller branch to the larger branch. All files from the smaller branch could be accessed via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) remote link. This would allow the smaller branch the ability to use a much smaller and less expensive router, which might help with the lag the users have experienced.…

When creating a multi-layered security plan, I would look at all seven domains of the IT infrastructure and then increase the security on each of those domains because that will increase the security for the whole plan. In the user domain, this is the quickest way for the system to be compromised the users. So I would implement complex passwords including eight or more characters, both upper and lower case, and use of at least one special character. Passwords will also need to be changed every 90 days and the same password cannot be used again for three calendar years. In the workstation domain, I would make sure that each workstations, whether desktop or laptop has some security on it like antivirus and malware protection installed. Laptops can be very vulnerable for loss or theft, which would make me install an encrypted hard drive so if it is stolen the data can only be retrieved by the owner. For the LAN domain, just train all users about email scams. I would guess that most users know not to access suspicious emails when on our system but I would still implement to the users a quick training course. Then I we should add spam filters this will help get rid of most of the junk email. In the LAN-to-WAN domain, we need to shut down the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server we have running and switch it over to use secure FTP so that only users allowed on our system can access our FTP server. In the WAN domain, we need to make sure that we have firewalls set up on our network that will filter all incoming traffic. This firewall will stop all traffic coming on to our system that is not meant or not wanted our network. In the Remote Access Domain, we need to establish strict user password policies, as well as lockout policies to defend against brute force attacks, require the use of authorization tokens have a real-time lockout procedure if token is lost, or stolen. The last domain is System/Application domain we need to…

Since Branch 2 is in a remote location and is already utilizing a 56k POTS line system I would recommend that the company invest in satellite internet service either as a main source of telecommunications link or as a redundant line. It would be more cost effective if the company used the satellite connection only for redundancy purposes.…

For this network, I initially projected that one server would be sufficient to perform all the tasks, however, in order to make the network work more efficiently and reduce occasions for system downtime it would be more conducive to use multiple servers. I recommend that we use 3 servers. The main server would be the DHCP server. The second would be the email server, and the third for file sharing and printing.…

I would say that the amount of users we have is about 200. And we will have plenty of room to expand in case we ever need to expand up to another 300 Users if we need to. And we will only have 5 departments (IT, H.R, Distribution, Maintenance, and Staff). As far as what departments permissions go we will have to sit with all department heads and come up with a valuable plan to benefit everyone. And since we are in a trucking distribution company named Spike’s Distro. We will only have one site for our infrastructure. The reason being is because we only have one building that everyone works out of. Our budget for creating this new infrastructure is going to be $35,000 to buy all the servers and switches needed including the computers to hold the active directory and domain servers. And we should buy physical servers as they are more efficient than virtual servers are. We should only create one domain per department. The only time we will need to create more is if we expand to more than one…

I would suggest installing a Local Area Network, which will supply networking capabilities to computers in the company. The set up for installation requires a modem and wireless routers to be able to connect all computers to the internet, using Ethernet cables or wireless card connections will allow all computers access to the internet via a broadband connection. Each computer or client will be able to access all necessary information on the network this can be achieved by utilizing file sharing will allowing that company to dictate who has access to what information on the network. I would also suggest printer sharing, which will allow the company to dictate who has access to the printer. I would also utilize TCP/IP Protocols; which are the rules that allow computers to connect to one another and that enable computers and peripheral devices to exchange information.…

The Active Directory domain structure is handy to have whether your client’s network is big or small. As you may recall, in Windows NT, each domain had its own Administrator account and its own Domain Admin group that was responsible for managing that domain. In Windows 2000 and 2003 Server, the domain Administrator account and the Domain Admin group still exist and can be used the same way that you were used to using them in Windows NT. There is also an Enterprise Admin group. Members of this group can manage any object within the entire Active Directory, regardless of what domain it exists within.…
