Django Unchained Analysis
Django Unchained, directed by Quentin Tarantino, is a gruesome tale of the extraordinary life of an African American, Django, and a White bounty hunter, Dr. Schultz. The film takes place just before the Civil War, in America’s southern region. The two create an unusual alliance; the bounty hunter will assist Django in finding his wife while Django helps Dr. Schultz track America’s most wanted. Although a portion of this film portrays slavery in a lighthearted manner, some aspects of it are shocking. The harsh, cruel treatment of African American slaves, forcing slave women into prostitution and unlikely relationship between a white man and black man were features that stood out to me the most.
For one, slaves were treated as unruly, uncivilized animals. The film opens by showing a group of slaves exhaustedly walking in the sweltering heat. Being a “comfort girl” is a slave forced into sexual slavery. Django and Dr. Schultz were conversing in a café, where his wife, Broomhilda, was the main topic. Broomhilda was too pretty to work the fields and could not be seen in the kitchen due to the ‘R’ branded on her cheek for “run away”. Not only was Broomhilda required to adhere with the rules of being a slave, her job was also to entertain the men that came through the plantation. I cannot begin to imagine the struggle of being a slave, much less a young slave girl stripped of her innocence and purity; forced to have sexual orientation with men. When Django and Dr. Schultz arrived at Mr. Candie’s home, they were welcomed by provocatively dressed young slaves attempting to be unusually seductive. I assume that was a survival mechanism used amongst the female slaves, either look pretty and entertain the men or labor in the scorching
