Divorce in Short Stories
Separation and Divorce Separation- is a legal status where married couples may disentangle their finances without divorce. Divorce- is the final termination of a marriage, canceling the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and dissolving the bonds of matrimony between two persons. Shoba and Shukumar, having planned a good life ahead of them had a sudden change in plans when their child had died. After that incident Shoba planned to separate from Shukumar and this did not help save their marriage. Her reasons for leaving Shukumar were because of their failure to love, communicate, and the change of roles between the two. Although, the decision of a divorce was never established it would have been for the better. Also another reason why Shoba planned on leaving Shukumar was the fact of being the sole supporter of the household. Failure can be considered as a loss of something or someone. In the story “A Temporary Matter” Shobar and Shukumar experience the loss of their child and the inability to love is triggered by this serious impact on their relationship. Within the failure to love Shobar and Shukumar ended up with a lot of difficulties coping with the loss of their son. These difficulties consisted of miscommunication and the change of gender roles between the two. Gender roles have always been the same throughout every culture and this stabilizes the balance in a good marriage. Expected from Shobar and Shukumar, the job of the male is to work and support his family. Also, the wife must stay at home she must cook, clean and do all the formalities of a simple house wife. But, through the mishap of the wife’s pregnancy the depressing loss of their unborn led to the inevitability to not be able to love. Within that failure to love depression arose in a different situation between Shobar and her husband causing a change in gender roles. After the switch of roles Shoba, the wife, is working and supporting the family while Shukumar cooks
