The Division/Classification essay utilizes what was learned with comparison/contrast. Again, division/classification deals with how the essay is structured. Following the following formula can help with division/classification formatting:

Start with a broad TOPIC. Break that topic down into at least three (3) CATEGORIES, as you see in the chart. Then break those categories down further into EXAMPLES. Have at least three examples under each category. Classification=Orderly arrangement of related data according to a systematic basis.
Division=Concerns one item and its parts.

1. Tell what is being classified
2. State the basis of the classification
3. Identify the classes it can be placed in
4. In supporting discussion, use one basis at a time to maintain clarity
5. Be sure terms, species, classifications and bases are clear to reader

1. As you break something into parts, make it clear to the reader where one part begins and another ends
2. Be consistent in handling point of view

Ex. In Botany, plants are broken down accordingly”
