In Chapters 7 and 8 of the book Creating Black Americans: African-American History and its meanings, 1619 to the present by Nell Irvin Painter, the author shows that even after emancipation, African Americans made huge steps in the advancement of their own education and professional lives, even when faced with white supremacy groups that were doing everything in their power to push blacks back into being slaves and a subordinate people. This idea is shown when Painter says, “But black success threatened and sometimes enraged Southerners unwilling to share power with people they considered little more than slaves” (Painter 178). In saying this she shows us that even though African Americans were now “free”, they were still struggling to survive…

This situation had created the hashtag “Oscars so white” which spread and started to raise awareness of underrepresentation of people of color in Hollywood. Even though that there are some people of color present, there the main focus is always on the efforts of white Americans (Anderson, 2016). Viola Davis, an African American actress known for her role in “How to Get Away With Murder," had won an Emmy award, and in her speech, she had addressed Hollywood’s problem with underrepresentation of people of color in the media and the need for diversity. She started off the speech by saying, “In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line….The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.” This part of her speech addresses the fact that people of color have difficulty getting roles and white Americans do not necessarily face this problem. With regards to casting, it is difficult for a person of color to get a role that does not cater to their expected behaviors and stereotypes. In order to people of color to prosper in Hollywood, there should be casting directors and producers that are willing to break stereotypical roles and hire people of color. The reason why many producers and casting directors are hesitant to do so is because they worry about the viewers response if they decide to cast a person of color because it would not cater to the majority race of America (white…

Looking at me you might wonder what I could possibly understand about diversity – middle class white male, college educated, married with two children, a boy and a girl. These broad generalizations describe me, but they do not define me; just as similar ones about others are equally uninformative. They note apparent features while failing to capture inherent uniqueness. To me, diversity encompasses respect and acceptance, concepts defined by actions taken to recognize and understand individuality, not simple toleration of obvious differences. Although I do not write articles or participate in protests demanding change, I quietly respect the dignity of individuals and value their perspectives. My service in the United States Army has profoundly shaped my attitudes and guided my actions supporting these beliefs.…

Diversity- the condition of being composed of variety: including the different types of people of different races or cultures in a group or organization. I highly believe that The University of Kentucky is a very diverse college. There are females, males, Latinos, African Americans, Caucasians, Asians, and many other different types of people that go to The University of Kentucky. Diversity is very important because people can learn from the different cultures and ways people live. You get to actually see the ways people live instead of reading about it. It’s really great to have a diverse university because many different people will get a better education and can achieve more than what they expected. Also people can learn to be in a different work environment as the future approaches.…
